Calckey is a Fediverse server type which includes lots of features that Mastodon doesn't yet have, such as emoji reactions, markdown, customisable interfaces, widgets and lots more.
To see for yourself, have a look on the official website at:
This doesn't really answer the question *, sure clients will have various monetization models (though WTH is transactions). The issue is what is the server/Bluesky PBLLC business model?
Are they going to start putting ads in the feed? Are they going to charge users or clients for access? Stay free and make it up in volume? I have no clue, not sure anyone does either.
https://mastodon.social being down, presumably because they're testing some of their latest features they're working on, and in the process kicking 1 million out of the 11.8 million people* (thanks @nemobis for the correction) from the fediverse is a good reminder to check out other Mastodon instances, or even other fediverse services and platforms.

There are noch "other fediverse networks". The only network is the #Fediverse with a lot of different services and platforms - Mastodon is one of all them.
And yes - if you will stay on a Mastodon implementation you can search for an other server - there are out many of them. And if you whan to go further you can choose a platform wiht #Plermoma, #Friendcia, #Hubzilla, #Misskey, #Calckey and others only for Microblogging. For other services you find more.
So, I think I've dug as deeply into the #hachyderm drama as I need to, and settled on some conclusions.
Most basically, the best insights came from seeing conversations on another platform: discord.
Admins from both sides were talking. And as it's a chat platform, the engagement and conversation was clearly more direct, free, expressive and clarifying.
If the fediverse wants to be the new internet, seriously, it needs to growup and move on from just microblogging.
I've been hearing a lot more talk about #Misskey and #Calckey, and have checked out calckey.social to see a surprisingly clean UI. Its feature richness is also appealing without going into feature-creep territory.
Will I migrate? Not anytime soon. Unless something happens to this instance, I'll be staying here until I set up my own instance. Though, now I'll decide if I want my future instance to be a Mastodon instance or a Calckey instance.
#Misskey#Calckey question, I know it's not built in, but is there any library or script I could use to delete my old posts? I find myself wanting to post on Mastodon rather than Calckey simply for the auto-deletion feature.
Once I get a stable job, I'm thinking of setting up a Mastodon/(Miss/Calc/Found)key server for me and my immediate family (which), but I'm debating on whether or not to go the #Mastodon route or go the #Misskey route; I know that Misskey may be easier to use because it only uses #javascript for its stack compared to Mastodon using JavaScript and #Ruby for its stack. I'm also debating what policies to implement to moderate my server; I will for sure adopt my current server's rules with a few edits, but I don't know what other rules I should enforce and how to enforce them.
When you look at the MAU (monthly active users) for the top 5 popular #fediverse projects, you see just how many active users Mastodon has compared to the rest.
@DaniEhm
Yeah. #Calckey is great. I ended up here after the #Misskey instance I was on went poof, and I like this more than I did that one. I did main an #Akkoma (https://outerheaven.club/) for a few days between these, though, and that was also good.
Has anyone made contact with the people behind #Audon? I think many #blind people would like to use it, but it has a few unlabelled buttons in the room UI.
I haven’t been able to find any way to contact them but this would be a big hit in the blind community if it were a bit more #accessible.
Fediverse musings: folk saying you don't really need a migration of your posts between servers are implicitly minimising the value of something from months ago. Having just 'boosted an old toot' 😎 of mine from 5 months ago, it feels like a Mastodon :mastodon: apologists' view for an obvious shortcoming. And let's be clear ...
Me, 6 months ago?: a "born again pachyderm" 🐘
Me, today?: a "Fediverse explorer" :fediverse:
It''s the biggest reason I'm an early adopter checking out Calckey now -- the team there *get" this 💜 and ... I'm testing out how their new history migration works ie. Mastodon :ms_arrow_right: Calckey and Calckey :ms_arrow_left_right: Calckey migrations. It's coming
I do feel like it's a shame that the biggest server for western artists (mastodon.art) is totally defederated from the biggest server for Japanese artists (misskey.io).
I can understand the reasons why and I don't have any real idea about how it could be resolved, but it still feels like a big wall in the middle of the #fediverse art community. And that sucks...
Hopefully something can be done to bridge the gap eventually.
Journalists should have their own Mastodon alternative to use on the #fediverse. Make sure it has all the stuff like QTs and better search they say they require to be here. It would only take one big media corporation to build it, and all these smaller outlets could run their own instances. Call it something like #Newswire.
I've been seeing some speculation about Project #Barcelona. I think they real concern should be that it will be a play similar to the old Microsoft book: embrace, extend, extinguish. Why do I think this is what #Meta is planning?
First, if they were just building a straight #Fediverse applicaaion, it would have been a no brainer to grab #Mastodon, #Misskey or any of the other platforms, tear apart the code and write their own. If all they were looking to do was have feature parity, and maybe add a bit of their own spin on it this would have only taken a few weeks with the manpower they have.
Second, their business model is one that requires them to dominate a space to sell advertising. Currently the big social media sites (FB, Instagram, TikTok, etc.) dominate the attention of pepole. This means that they will extend the ActivityPub model by using an algorithm based model to keep people's attention.
Third, they will do what they can to build the largest market share - ie, they will try to dominate the Fediverse by doing what they can to drive users to their platofrm. This will be done through extending the functionality in ways currently supported (which will later go to the W3C to become part of he ActivityPub spec).
Now, as to the "cultural change" this will cause in the Fediverse... I don't think we'll start seeing a big impact. They do have moderation, and I think they will learn quickly that if they don't moderate things pretty tightly they won't be able to enact all of the parts of their plan. And I think those plans are going to be more important.
And yes, I do think data scraping from the messages and profiles, will be an issue. Something that the #Fediverse should take seriously.
Oh, also, I will speculate they won't support profile migration...at least not out from Barcelona, but probably in-bound.
I would like to sincerely thank @genewitch , for opening up a ticket for making the #Misskey web interface more accessible to all #Blind & #VisuallyImpaird users.
Comment among the #GitHub thread if anyone has ideas/thoughts, and spread the word!
