Powderfinger formed in #Brisbane in 1989. Until their break-up in 2010, the band line-up was vocals Bernard Fanning, guitarists Darren Middleton & Ian Haug, bass guitarist John Collins & drummer Jon Coghill.

Darren Middleton was asked why he thought the band had become so successful and he said "Patience, persistence, being ready if an opportunity presented itself. DRIVE".

Appropriate clip, eh?

#Brisbane #punk rock had its main impact between 1975 and 1984 as part of the overall punk rock scene in Australia. According to rock music historian, Ian McFarlane, the Queensland capital provided "some of the most anarchistic bands" of that era whilst it was "arguably the most conservative city" in the country. The development of the local punk movement differed from other cities because of its relative geographic isolation from other similar trends.

Meanjin holds deep, sacred, heartfelt knowledge for First Nations people.

The Turrbal and Yuggera peoples have lived in this area for more than 32,000 years and their ancestors go back more than 60,000 years. The Turrbal and Jagera people speak Yuggera and their name for #Brisbane is #Meanjin.

I acknowledge the Traditional Owners of this Country. and their continuing connection to Land, Sea and Community.

I pay my respects to them, their Cultures, and to the Elders both past and present.

Going to end this fly mini-series with a member of one of the earliest-diverging branches of flies: a mosquito!

This is an elephant mosquito (Toxorhynchites speciosus), so called because they're huge, not elephant predators! They're actually friends: the adults eat nectar and the babies eat other mosquitoes' larvae, especially disease-transmitting tiger mosquitoes!

Here we have a flesh fly (genus Sarcophaga)! Their name comes from their babies' diet: they feast on carrion.

Time to continue with more flies! This guy is from genus Cerdistus, part of a group of successful aerial predators known as robber flies. Harmless to humans, they catch other insects on the wing.

If you're interested in how I can tell it's a guy and not a gal, here's a gal! At the tip of the abdomen, males have grasping appendages and females have poking ones: it's an ovipositor for laying eggs, not a stinger.

Long-legged flies (Sciapodinae)! These metallic green and copper flies are a common sight in Meanjin/Brisbane, and despite their diminutive size of a few millimetres, they're actually predators of other insects!
