As someone else's experience has just reminded me, becoming a manager isn't a promotion; it's a job change.

It's a broken workplace that forces a talented engineer (or aid worker, or writer, or whatever) to become a mediocre manager just to keep their career from stalling.

James Timpson (one of my champions of doing #capitalism differently), points to the problem of finkncialised modes of #management:

'Many businesses that are struggling don’t seem to realise that their most valuable asset isn’t the stock on the shelves, it’s the loyalty & passion of their colleagues'!

Here he advocates 'upside-down management' and the valuing of staff happiness as a central part of #management.

We need more Timpson's and fewer Musks...

I just had to give my 11 machine a page file. It has 64GB of DDR5 RAM and for some reason, it's all being grabbed by plugins, Explorer, and tools like in 1GB chunks.

It seems like these days are thinking "I'll just grab 1GB and commit it, doesn't matter if I don't use it...".

Programmers these days are mostly arseholes who did a 4-day online course though, so I am team on this one.

Just 3% in and I can tell this is a significant work. Mark's book is about #HCI. Everyone is a cyborg today: we live life in tandem with ubiquitous silicon-based processes. (My words) We need to be aware of what is happening to ourselves, so everyone should read this. But if you are in HCI, #psychology, #sociology, #business, or #management, this knowledge will directly inform your work.

Earnings growth, while easing, seems to be continuing at a level that will likely prompt the BoE to cite a wage-#inflation spiral as the reason to (again) not ease #interestrates....

I've posted a lot on this, so here will just say the BoE is missing the main issue which is the UK continuing crisis in #productivity growth, which is to say prices are driven up by external factors (and profits), but the BoE only 'sees' the wage rises...

The real problem(s) are in #management & #investment!
