Started at 5/31 11am ET. We’ll see how fast this baby moves on a 12yo #MacMini using #ProtonVPN & gigabit #fios through a #glinet#AXT1800 router, a CAT6-connected AP, a #MoCA -connected AP, & finally CAT6. It’s a circuitous route, I know, but these are the limitations of a 74yo house.
FWIW speeds right now are slower than usual: 174 Mbps down, 178 up. Usually in the 500-600 range. Maybe it’s the age of the #Mac, or I’m splitting between the #Ente & speed test?
Just checked in at 30.5 hours and we’re done! I’m fully uploaded to @ente! Now I gotta learn the ropes, figure out what to do with all (100GB) my old mp3s (maybe store them temporarily on #ProtonDrive, or just an external HD), make sure I’m not missing anything, and then convert this ancient 2012 #MacMini to a #Linux machine!
Studio Update: A few weeks ago I was soliciting opinions about whether or not to get a Mac Mini to replace my ailing, nearly decade-old PC.
Opinions differed, leaning toward "yes but get more RAM than base model" and I had just about decided not to do it when I stumbled on a good video from a music tech vlogger I really like (video here: https://youtu.be/obkCMxaIIFM) who did exactly what I was thinking and had great results.
So, on the literal last day of the most recent sale (price was $499 but was going to return to base $599 price the following day) I went ahead and bought one from a place that gave me a 15 day return window on the purchase. I figured I'd test it thoroughly and, if it failed to live up to expectations, send it back.
That return window ended yesterday and folks, the Mac isn't going anywhere.
Coming from the inherently limited MPC platform has my expectations and workflow tuned to minimalism, but still!
The Mac Mini also handles my daily web browsing and YouTube watching tasks fine, still accesses Google Docs/Sheets just fine, etc. 8 gigs of RAM runs just fine, TBH! I may hit the wall with it at some point, but if I can get 3-5 years of use out of it before that happens, it'll be worth it.
Anyone using a base model (8 gb ram, 256mb SSD) #M2#MacMini for music production, specifically Ableton Live? Internet says it is up to the task but I'd rather hear it from someone directly.
My almost ten-year-old PC is dying and I hope to revive it but as plan B, I see that the Mac Mini is on sale for $499 right now and I'm pretty sure any PC I bought for that much would be considerably less potent as a music production PC. (You can also convince me I'm wrong about that if you are inclined.)
Cheannaich mi #MacMini 2012 bho Amazon ‘son £68 na bu tràithe air an t-seachdain seo ⁊ bha ioghnadh orm nuair a ràinig e gun chomharra sam bith air. Dh'àrdaich mi an HDD 500GB gu SSD 1TB, an RAM o 4GB gu 16GB ‘son £70 ⁊ chleachd mi #OpenCore Legacy Patcher gus an tionndadh #macOS as ùire a stàladh air. Tha mi air a bhith ga chleachdadh fad an latha ⁊ gu ruige seo tha coltas gu bheil e ag obair gu foirfe.
Bluetooth is definitely not fixed correctly on the latest M2 Mac Minis. At least for speakers.
One of the complaints about the M1 Mac Mini was bluetooth connectivity issues, with speakers, mice, and keyboards.
Mice/keyboards work much better on the M2 Mac Mini, but bluetooth speakers still randomly disconnect, and often require a) rebooting the speaker (unplug, plug in), or unpairing with the mac and re-pairing to get them to work again for a few hours.
Remember all those reports about how bad Bluetooth was on the Mac Mini M1 boxes?
It's also bad on the Mac Mini M2s. At least on mine. My keyboard and mouse stay connected, but other devices (like my bluetooth speakers) drop all the time, random times, mid songs, etc.
I'm a bit pissed cuz all the "zero day" reviewers of Mac stuff claimed the problem was fixed. It is not.
I have to remind myself that zero-day reviews are basically useless for any tech.
I've had my trigger finger (and Visa card) primed and ready for like 2 weeks now, waiting for a Mac Mini M2 with 16gb (I don't care about the HD size, since I will be using a nifty made for mac mini USB hub / NVMe M.2 enlosure) to show up in Apple Canada's Refurb listings. I just missed one a week ago.
My 2016 era iMac 27" Intel just can't cope any longer with Lightroom, Photoshop, and a gazillion web browser windows open.
Any #MacMini M2 users out there? What monitors do you like?
Flawless unsupervised process with zero interventions (as usual).
Loving the vineyard wallpaper already. Not sure what new features will be significant for me. I do most of my work on my five year old #iPadPro anyway (it does have a #MagicKeyboard with trackpad attached).
Well damn, I just fixed a problem thats been plaguing my the last 6 months.
Up until just now, Every time I rebooted my Mac Mini with the Dell Monitor attached via USB-C Display Port, it would hit the login screen and then kernel panic and reboot. looping.
Unplug monitor, wait for login screen, plug it back in, it was fine. HDMI - fine too.
So what was the issue? Logitech Bluetooth USB Dongle for my MX Keys KB + Mouse.
Issue occurs when dongle is plugged in via monitor, or directly plugged into mac mini. Unplugged, no issues with monitor.
The main problem now is in pre-boot environments before the Apple BT Driver loads - I'm thinking FileVault password and maybe a lesser degree - recovery partition. I'm thinking maybe just having spare keyboard for those situations.
If anyone can confirm if the Logitech MX Keys can be used to enter a password without using the Logitech usb dongle, it would be appreciated (I've already read plenty of older documentation suggesting it cannot)
Ich nutze eine Logitech-Tastatur auf zwei Rechnern, die zu beiden Systemen kompatibel ist. Beim Wechsel schaltet die Tastatur aber nicht automatisch um.
I've still not seen a PC motherboard that equals my 2018 #MacMini for Thunderbolt support. In high-end boards you get maybe two TB3/TB4 ports at best. Usually you have to spend a PCIe slot for any.
It's a shame. Thunderbolt is very versatile, and not just because you can share peripherals with USB-C mobile devices. It's like having external PCIe. Things that you'd normally have to take your case apart for, you can just plug in.
