The new Linux phone from Jolla & its benefits? ⛵ :linux:
◉Sailfish OS - the only independent commercial mobile OS
◉Sailfish is NOT 100% closed source - Jolla plans to open the remaining blobs
◉More "Linuxy" than Android; Qt / Wayland / filesystem
◉Free of Google / Apple
◉Use Android compatibility in case an :android: app is needed
◉Jolla is a Finnish company - 🇫🇮 / 🇮🇸 are considered most trustworthy nations in Europe
:linux: Jolla | Makers of truly competitive Linux for mobile - NEW PHONE COMING! 🤳
◉Jolla is a small but spicy company on a field of relentless competition
◉Due this - Sailfish OS moves to a subscription model (but it's just 5€ / month)
◉New budget phone comes with 2 ARM Cortex-A75 CPU / 6 Cortex-A55 cores
◉8GB of RAM / 128gt space / 4,000 mAh bat
◉Pre order for €299 (incl. a 1-yr sub) & Jolla takes €50 deposit
I've wanted to try non-#Android#Linux on mobile for ages and this looks like the best way to do it.
The cost is reasonable, but there's a subscription necessary after a year — which I'll pay if I still love the device and want to support Jolla still, or I'll abandon the device and use as a toy if not.
It apparently supports Android apps to some degree, but I won't mind if stuff doesn't work and prompts me toward digital hygiene.
At the #JollaLoveDay2 event a new limited edition Community Phone was announced, showcasing the latest #SailfishOS. It can be pre-ordered and the limited batch will be delivering in August. The package includes a 12-month Sailfish OS subscription. An extension of the subscription can be purchased after 1 year for future software updates (but isn't mandatory).
Love love love what the #Jolla team is doing with AI — reimagining and building systems that are data-ownership centered to put privacy first —privacy as autonomy, not privacy as information security for cloud providers holding your data.
I am blown away by #Jolla's new subscription model... I can understand why it is necessary, but at this point I would go with #PlasmaMobile with #PostmarketOS: open source as I wish #SailfishOS was
Now they're announcing some trustworthy 100% private, user-controlled AI thing - that's supposed to be helpful with everyday tasks. I am not hype on AI, but if the promises hold up, that's interesting.
📣 Get ready for Jolla Love Day 2 on May 20, 2024! Dive into the latest Jolla updates, meet the new AI companion mind2, and connect with the community. 🚀🎉 Watch live at 17:30 Helsinki time (15:30 UTC). #JollaLoveDay

Sailfish Community, you’ve excelled! 20 languages for the #SailfishOS 4.6.0 release are now fully or nearly translated.
The 4.6.0 Sauna release is shaping up. Beta testers have provided valuable feedback to #Jolla. If things go well, they're aiming for an April rollout to Early Access subscribers.
Sailfish OS 4.5.0.25 now available. This update only includes a revised EULA and thus prepares for the upcoming 4.6.0 Sauna release.
For older devices (Jolla C, Tablet, Gemini PDA, Xperia X), 4.6.0 will be the final update.
Also: changes to payment handling on Jolla Shop & predictive text input issue for new #SailfishX license buyers, currently being resolved.
⛵ Jolla | Premium mobile OS (Sailfish X) makers bring a new device 📲
An AI powered one - described at this early stage as "private & secure blackbox for your life".
"We don’t believe it’s a good model to put AI run locally here in the phone. It’s not secure. You can never make smartphones secure enough for that. We believe that in this AI era privacy becomes much more important." ~Antti Saarnio / Jolla
@linmob sadly those newer versions of #SailfishOS don't support #Jolla original phone the Jolla-C, the #xperia path seems like when a new model is supported, then that model already has reached the end of it's sales, so you can't get a device unless you buy some half broken one on ebay.
The Sailfish Community News for February 22, 2024 highlights the upcoming 4.6.0 Sauna software release by #Jolla. This release streamlines maintenance efforts by discontinuing support for AppSupport 4 and raising the minimum kernel requirement to 4.x, which may impact older devices. The #SailfishOS community, instrumental in localization efforts across 40+ languages, will play a key role in testing the 4.6.0 release and addressing reported issues.
This last weekend #Jolla and many members of the Sailfish Community were attending #FOSDEM'24 in Brussels. Jolla showed #SailfishOS at the Linux on Mobile stand and organised an evening event with a presentation about Jolla's future direction.
