Hogback stones in Govan Old Parish Church. Dating from the era of the Vikings more than 1,000 years ago, they're thought to have served as grave markers. They are ubique to the Viking areas of northern Britain and the Govan Hogbacks are the largest known examples. They are now part of the collection of early Christian-Viking relics known as the Govan Stones.

The amazing collection of sculptured medieval graveslabs in the lapidarium, originally a burial aisle, in the churchyard at Kilmartin Church in Argyll. These are some of the more recent historical wonders to be found in Kilmartin Glen. More pics and info: https://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/kilmartin/kilmartinstones/index.html

The remnants of the Gorbals Burial Ground on Old Rutherglen Road in Glasgow. Established in 1715, and still containing some gravestones dating back to the 1720s, it's now known as the Gorbals Rose Garden. It's one of the few parts of the old Gorbals not swept away by a series of redevelopments since the 1960s.

Glasgow Necropolis. Built on the remains of an extinct volcano, it was opened in 1833. While there are around 3,500 grave monuments, there are up to 50,000 people buried within it, meaning most burials remain unmarked.

The company rethinking grave markers for Māori and Pasifika people

The thing that got me about this article was this:

"She was shocked to hear from the company that more than 97 per cent of headstones in Aotearoa are shipped in from overseas, from countries such as India and China, with some coming from as far as Norway."

But what a great idea about the Lifestones.

Walking through Eastwood New Cemetery on the southside of Glasgow recently, I was struck by the presence of a series of gravestones marking the last resting places of around twenty five unidentified people killed in the Clydebank Blitz in March 1941.

About half of the 1,200 people killed in these air raids were in Glasgow and the other half in Clydebank, and while this part of the city was not hit, there was a temporary mortuary at nearby Crossmaloof and these mass burials may have originated from bodies which arrived there, but were never identified or claimed.

Greek temples, Arcs of the Covenant, Egyptian obelisks, Roman tombs, Celtic crosses: I love all the different styles of grave monuments for those buried in Glasgow's Necropolis.

The Glasgow Necropolis: Many of the architects and sculptors who created the beautiful buildings for the city of the living also created monuments for the city of the dead.
