There aren’t enough characters for us to tell you about all the incredible things that the sourmash package, a command-line tool and Python/Rust library for metagenome analysis and genome comparison using k-mers, does, but we promise that you’re going to want to check out this incredible package from Tessa Pierce-Ward, Titus Brown, and Luiz Irber!
First time as the opponent at a Swedish viva, Tjarno, on speciation and inversions in snails. Memorable field/snail trip yesterday, to Ursholmen islands, helped by gorgeous weather and warm sea. "Viva" v. different from UK equivalent, quite a lot of pros, and few negatives (except the £!). #genomics#littorina#snails#sweden#phd#viva#Speciation
More discussion on that preprint (yes just a preprint and getting Nature commentary!) about when exactly did the #Neanderthal gene flow into modern humans happen. Acc to Iasi et al, from 47 Ka for about 6000 years. Interesting here is the 'introgression deserts' with immediate selection against Nean genes for certain areas.
New manuscript category coming soon for Molecular Ecology and Molecular Ecology Resources, "minireviews" on e.g. new topic or research area for which there is not yet sufficient data for a full review or focused overview of a niche topic ... and more. Message me for further information #genomics#MolecularEcology
Snippet: HERVs are “non-coding” sequences comprising of genetic material that originated from the infection of germ cells with ancient retroviruses during evolution, which now constitute approximately 8% of the human genome7,8,9. After the initial infections took place, these sequences inserted in the genome and multiplied...
I'm super excited that our #MolluscGenomics meeting is finally happening next week! Looking forward to welcoming people to #UNamur and online 🐌🦪🐙🐚#mollusc#genomics
👋 We have extended the deadline for this post-doc position in our lab! 👇
I am looking for candidates for 2-years #postdoc position, working on my #ERC project, developing a new statistical method to infer the distribution of the effect sizes of QTL. More information here : https://euraxess.ec.europa.eu/jobs/225408
Exciting opportunity to work in Paris, in the middle of the Jardin des Plantes!

Just read this, https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2317240121, that extraordinary high rate of mtDNA evolution in some plants is associated low mtDNA copy number. Lower Ne is the obvious explanation - but the authors instead put fwd homologous recombination, because it is less effective in low copy number environments. More complicated explanation, with no direct evidence? Thoughts? #genomics#mtDNA#mitochondria#plastid#plants
Neil Ward tells us about the role that genomics can play in conserving biodiversity and how innovative technologies such as HiFi sequencing are helping biodiversity projects.

Wow, what this company did to these families is so terrible! And the story reflects so horribly on everyone involved in genetics, prenatal testing, private labs, etc.
I'm grateful for people like the ex-employees who were willing to speak up, and also for CBC for doing this kind of investigation.
