This is your periodic reminder that you will be happier in the #Fediverse and find it more rewarding if you are quick to follow people and also quick to unfollow / mute / block.
Quick to follow is important because that's how to build a community of interest.
Quick to unfollow etc. is even more important, because you don't owe anyone here your time or attention and you shouldn't give it to people who don't spark joy. #FediTips#fediquette
Apparently not many people believe me when I say that "normal" users using the "block this domain" option, is functionally just a mute....
There's gonna be LOTS of very mad people when they find out for themselves that meta/Threads can still see their posts....😬🤦♂️
To actually block Threads, you have to be on an instance that actually blocks them. As of right now, the biggest instance that blocks Threads is masto.to
So all this talk most of you are doing, means absolutely nothing because the majority of you are still federated....
@justinling I've been following you for years and always appreciate your posts Justin. If I could make one suggestion it would be if you could please add alt text to your images as it will help so many people who otherwise can't appreciate what you're sharing. #alttext#feditips
Although I like the "deck" option in Mastodon (settings -> preferences -> appearance -> Enable advanced web interface) I am wondering if anyone knows of alternative (web-based) visualizations of lists. (I'm getting a bit tired of all the horizontal scrolling). Any tips?
I'm curious who else got a DM from a certain Fediverse account that lists different instances for people to get information about? Specifically asking about a DM telling you that to continue to be listed on their site, your instance is required to defederate from a certain other platform that is owned by Meta.
If you got a DM from them and care to share that information, that would be great.
I get that we as humans all have a right to an opinion. In fact, I personally respect that we all have a right to an opinion.
But please, do NOT try and shove your opinion down someone else's throat and tell them that if their opinion doesn't match your opinion, then they are wrong and they need to think about changing that opinion.
That's NOT how this world works and it's certainly not how it's going to work with me or anything I'm associated with!
On joining the #Fediverse, of which Mastodon is just a part, the first thing to do is not follow people but fill you profile in . Doesn't have to be 5,000 words, just 4 or 5 hashtags about things you like, then over time look at other peoples profiles & add to yours
A lot of people block or mute empty profiles here so get that profile started.

I generally have an auto-follow-back policy on Mastodon. I do so because I think it’s really important to make newcomers feel welcome, and to help them build out their home timeline so it can be an interesting and interactive experience.
But, I’m really not inclined to follow back people who haven’t put any effort into building a bio for their homepage. I’m interested in people. I’m here for people. This place is built for people. It’s the least we can do for one another.

Admins, remember, it's YOUR decision if you decide to defederate, block or mute Threads on YOUR server, or if you choose to NOT do any of those.
There are many others out there that will try and force their opinion(s) down your throat as much as possible, but in the end, the server is YOUR SERVER, not theirs.
You run your server how YOU want, not how others would like for you to run your server.
Can't decide if I should block the threads.net domain or not.
If I can view content generated by users in the corpoverse with 0 odds of encountering the advertisements which fund those corporations, doesn't that mean that the corporation is working for me for free? Doesn't that mean they're losing?
What arguments do the good people of Mastodon have in favor of each position?
PSA: Normal users that use the "..." menu to "block this domain" hoping to completely block Threads are misinformed.
At the user-level, this is LITERALLY just a mute. It's like putting a blindfold on, in a room filled with hungry bears. They will still be able to see, interact, AND reply to your posts, you just won't be able to see them.
Right now, Threads federation is a one-way street. Therefore they cannot see your posts currently. However, I can only assume that once they can, the "block this domain" feature will work the exact same way that it does for the rest of Fedi.
If you want to make sure that you're completely cut off from Threads/Meta, your options are:
-Make sure your instance blocks them completely
-Move to an instance that DOES block them completely.
-Create your own instance that blocks them completely.
-Make your entire profile completely private.
There's lots of misinformation out there. Don't be misinformed.
PSA: If you're new to Fedi, specifically coming from Threads and hoping to see the Fediverse comments on your Threads posts, you either have to follow your Threads account from your Fediverse account OR copy the link to the post and paste it into the search bar of your instance (NOT your web browser search bar).
We're less than a month away from the end of the signing period for Petition #e4769! We have an excellent number of signatures but more is always better!
If you'd like to see more Fediverse servers and used by (Canadian) government in particular, this is the petition for you!
does anyone know why, when I am NOT logged in, my pixelfed.social feed only shows images that were directly uploaded to pixelfed (as opposed to imported from instgram using the json file)? I have about 500 images imported from IG that dont show up in my profile feed if Im not logged in. Weird.
@johan yeah its not good for sure! Why does this happen @dansup ? I cant find any permissions that might need tweaking. But all the imported posts with older dates dont show up unless Im logged in.
Tip for the new Mastodon UI for profile name selection. You can double click the username then copy it (via keyboard or right click + copy) and it includes the full username with domain attached in your clipboard. Not initially apparent, but good to know!
This is just a friendly reminder that we as instances here on Mastodon do NOT run ads or track and sell any of your data. Most all instances and their services are paid for directly out of the owners pockets, therefore donations are greatly appreciated as they go to fully support the instance you are using and enjoy.
If you can, consider supporting your instance admins! Even $5 goes a long way!
