Fannish folks of the fediverse!

Do you know any fandom groups on here? Doesn't matter what kind – etc. – or whether it's multi/pan-fandom or for a specific one. Let me know in the comments! I'm working on a little something-something :bbtea:

Today (2024-02-29), https://chirp.social closed its doors.

Thank you for providing a good service!

To all the members of @kpop and @kdrama, since the service is, sadly, closing down by February 29th, we're moving to a new one.

I invite you all to follow: @kpop and/or @kdrama.

The #FediGroups platform works with all #Fediverse software, so there shouldn't be issues of not receiving group posts from members.

In addition to that, you have to follow the groups first before your post will be boosted. It will at least filter out potential spam from accounts who mass tag but are not actually group members.

Another feature is, if you want to share a post to the group, but you don't want it boosted, you can add a bang or exclamation mark, like so: !@group@example.com

Let's continue our community discussions over in the new group! See you all there!

Hello, everyone in the @pinoy and @Philippines .

The #FediGroups boosting group has just been approved!

As is usual:

  1. Follow @pilipinas
  2. To post, just tag the group.

There is a layer of protection in place though.

  • You have to follow the group first before your post is boosted to the group members. This will at least filter out spams (they usually don't follow the group, they just tag).

FediGroups also have a feature to post to the group, but not boost it. The format is adding a bang/exclamation point before the tag, like so: !@pilipinas.

So, see you all over @pilipinas !

If you haven't heard, sadly, , one of the popular “groups” platform, is shutting down “probably” on February 29th.

In an email they sent to admins, the owner and developer can no longer support https://chirp.social financially as they failed to find a new job after they were laid off by last year.

So, if you have a Chirp.Social groups, either move to (https://a.gup.pe) (as suggested by Chirp.Social), or if I may, to (https://fedia.io), an [flagship] instance.

This reminds us the importance of having a built-in groups feature, and one where the groups feature actually federates.

Back in 2008, when the was born, we did have a built-in federated groups in / (today known as ). We used bang (!) instead of at (@). A built-in groups feature is more stable as established instances can host them.

Today, we have and (as well as -based instances) to fill in that, as groups is a built-in feature in those software products. It's just a matter of finding an instance that's open to hosting groups for any topic for the ActivityPub protocol.

That said, any Friendica, Hubzilla, Streams-based instances you suggest for groups?

Okay, so I just discovered a new platform/service called / .

It's still on its testing phase, and creation of new groups is by approval.

Sad to read that chirp.social is closing down from 29 February. Always sad to see innovative services go.

We're here to help provide an alternative Group Boosting service.

We wish you well @mpuckett

It's almost time. We're super-excited. #FediGroups is entering public testing now, before a full live launch.

Many of us have used other Boosting Groups, but they only work well if you follow from Mastodon accounts. We know there is a wider fediverse. FediGroups works with all the favourites, including #Mastodon, #Firefish, #Iceshrimp, #Catodon, #Sharkey, and more. One big happy family 👪

A note on the current #Threadiverse expansion: As a few have pointed out, #Lemmy and #Kbin are OK, but as far being Reddit replacements, remember that neither software is really stable or mature, especially in terms of moderation. It'll be a while before we can really consider either one as a good place to build a community.

FWIW #Friendica is probably the most reliable #Fedi software for groups right now, although it doesn't really replicate Reddit at all. If you do like forums though, it's pretty sweet—and it federates pretty much perfectly with Lemmy and Kbin servers, as well as other servers like Mastodon, #Misskey #Calckey, #Hubzilla, and even #diaspora. #FediGroups
