My #firefox and #duckduckgo experiment is going well. But email feels like a bigger commitment along this #degoogle path. I looked at the usual suspects like Proton, Mailfence, Fastmail, etc. I also ran across #disroot (https://disroot.org). This is much more than just email! They offer #NextCloud#Cryptpad#Jitsi and all sorts of other stuff. A group of loosely aggregated open source stuff, and feels less seamless as a result. But definitely interesting. Anyone have any experience with them?

a propos #childAlert, które od wczoraj krąży po sieci.
Najważniejsze: znaleziono 11-latkę z Sosnowca
a mniej istotne:
No i teraz widać, dlaczego Policja tak robi :)
#DuckDuckGo has a lot going for it, but seems to lean heavily on Microsoft's Bing for their search backend.
#Brave is making the case for it's privacy-focused search engine that it doesn't just insulate you from big tech-- it has its own crawler and own search index:
I’ve only just recently switched to #Firefox and #DuckDuckGo as default on desktop. Maybe 2 weeks? But satisfied so far. I think I’ve maybe cross-checked with Google maybe once or twice.
Also, big plug for the DDG browser on iOS. I’ve actually been enjoying it a lot.
i use #ecosia or #duckduckgo for internet search and avoid using the word "google" to imply im searching stuff on the internet. just proves how google really monopolized the web even as a verb 🙂
I drafted a new article about DuckDuckGo's reliance on Bing. Shortly after drafting, and before editing, I read that TechCrunch had been blacklisted/de-indexed by Bing. I suppose the timing was good for the article but it created more work for me. (Obligatory note that NLJ is de-indexed by Bing, and as a result, invisible to DuckDuckGo.)
My favorite feature of #DuckDuckGo? You can browse results using ⬆️ and ⬇️ keys. Also, the fact that they are not spying and the results are often more useful than #Google...
I had the perfect example of the way our devices are listening to us.
Yesterday I said to hubby that I was going to clean the dishwasher because I hadn't done it for ages, and he said, have you got any tablets to do it with?
Today out of the blue, I get an email advertising dishwasher tablets!!
His phone was switched on, and on the kitchen table. There was no other way this conversation could have been transmitted.
@oldrawgabbit people are responding that the only way to prevent this is to never use technological devices
no, an option for privacy is to just turn things off when not in use
other options are to use more private devices
"When beginning the journey of restoring digital privacy, some people get overwhelmed with all the work involved, and perhaps give up. Don’t let that be you. Understand that you don’t need to do everything right away. Instead, start small and go step by step at your own pace. With each step in the process, you get more security and control over your personal data, which is a small victory." https://restoreprivacy.com/google-alternatives/
"In the modern age of digital data exploitation, your privacy has never been more critical, and yet many believe it is already a lost cause. It is not. Your privacy is up for grabs, and you need to care about it." https://www.privacyguides.org/en/basics/why-privacy-matters/
btw i've been daily driving https://search.birdcat.cafe and the performance has been fucking phenomenal. please try out #searxng, it's really good and gives you search results from #google, #duckduckgo, #bing, #wikipedia, and more. you can also disable the ones you don't want to use! it's pretty sick 😎
A #DuckDuckGo audit project was created on the #Purism git repo. They spontaneously & silently deleted the whole project (data & accounts) without warning. They also said nothing after the sabotage. This was the project that was the basis for these findings:
@Remontoire@serenitynot The way they ghosted a customer is starkly comparable to the manner in how they deleted the #DuckDuckGo research project & deleted existence of the contributor without a word.
I know it’s only one metric, but it sure does look like Bing is having serious problems and that the size of its index has collapsed. Probably not so coincidentally, a bunch of websites like Techdirt have disappeared from it. https://www.worldwidewebsize.com/
Techdirt just posted that #Bing#DuckDuckGo#Microsoft blackholed them. i checked and sure enough, nothing.
this is why SEO is a scam. it has given Google, Bing and whomever is left in search, millions of hours in FREE LABOR for what is the crapshoot possibility of a crawl & link; forget about the first page placement.
that privilege is for sites owned by parasites corps.; willing to negotiate rankings off the books, and not a ±20 yrs-old indie blog like Techdirt
I had been using MS #Edge as a personal browser for quite a while, with #DuckDuckGo as the default search engine. I've now moved to #Vivaldi. My only gripe (for now) is that the built-in social media integration is not with #Mastodon in general, or the #Fediverse in generaler, but just with Vivaldi's instance. I would have liked to be able to use the sidebar for my own little instance, instead of keeping a tab open for it.
The Fall of Stack Overflow: SO has lost around 50% of its traffic. This decline is similarly reflected in site usage, with approximately a 50% decrease in the number of Q&A, as well as the number of votes. The AI bots hit SO hard for sure, at least that is what I think. I still see SO as top answers in Google query but Bing is upto no good. LOL. https://observablehq.com/@ayhanfuat/the-fall-of-stack-overflow
