Death Valley visitors drawn to the hottest spot on Earth during ongoing U.S. heat wave

Although I'd rather be sitting in the shade of a friendly tree, by a Maine lake, surrounded by majestic conifers, we need to get ready for our climate future.

I love the interplay of shadows and light on sand dunes. When you're there early in the morning and after a windstorm, the purity of blue shadows and golden morning light feels inspiring.

"The Death Valley Germans [...] were a family of four tourists from #Germany who went missing in #DeathValley National Park [...], on 23 July 1996. Despite an intense search and rescue operation, no trace of the family was discovered and the search was called off. In 2009, the remains of the two adult members of the family were discovered" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_Valley_Germans

NWS nudged up again, to a forecast of 132 degrees on Sunday in #DeathValley.

Would be the highest reliably recorded temperature on earth if it happens. The 134 recorded there in 1913 is widely regarded as incorrect. #azwx #cawx #hot #climatechange

YIKES! could approach 130° F as heat intensifies over

Temperatures in the scorching hot Southwest are expected to climb higher in the coming days. Locations including and could each flirt with all-time record highs.

By Alex Sosnowski, AccuWeather senior meteorologist, July 12, 2023

A little toasty in the #Desert #Southwest over the next week.

So far, the forecast max of 129 is a couple degrees off #DeathValley / #UnitedStates highest temperature on record, but has risen a bit as we close in.

Current peak is expected this weekend but no end in sight to high heat. #azwx #cawx

ianlivingston,

NWS now forecasting 130 in #DeathValley Sunday.

134 is the all-time high there in 1919, but 130 is the highest reliably recorded anywhere on earth. #cawx #azwx

Interesting (but sad) death, Death Valley National Park; man found dead, air conditioning in his vehicle was not functional. In this kind of heat, you likely want to travel in pairs or in a convoy so if you have a breakdown or vehicle issue, you do not perish of heat illness. https://www.nps.gov/deva/learn/news/fatality-7-3-2023.htm

Continued: "The high temperature the previous day was 126°F. The overnight low temperature was 98°F. The vehicle was found to be operational and was not stuck, however the air-conditioning in the vehicle was not operational. The driver’s window was found down, further indication that the air conditioning was not functioning when the man was driving. "

Zabriskie Point, Death Valley. 103 degrees wasn’t as uncomfortable as I expected, probably because the air was so dry.

Love the simplicity of sand dunes. Simple lines, beautiful contrast between shadows, light and sky as the sun set. This is Mesquite Dunes in Death Valley, the hottest place in the USA and one of the hottest places on earth. Surprisingly high season is during the heat of summer. People just want to experience that kind of heat.

Was fortunate to see some of the wild burros wandering around the southwestern side of Death Valley National Park, it's always fun to see them doing their thing in such a relatively austere environment. These were taken at about 4,000' near Wildrose.

I have always managed to forget to take the headlamp when going out for astrophotography and have always depended on my friend for some red light to set my equipment up for the shots. This time I was going alone and I did not want lack of light to ruin my once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to shoot the #milkyWay at #DeathValley #NationalPark so I stuffed it down the of the jacket that I usually wear. I woke up at 3 AM and drove to #badwaterBasin only to realize the damn thing was nowhere to be found. I did not want to waste time searching for it and so hiked about a mile in total darkness for this shot. When I packed up for the day, I trudged back to the car and found the headlamp right there on the seat along with my jacket! It was so hot that I did not think about wearing my jacket - The things one has to go through for some shots... ;-)
