Scientists say they've found a way to cement from demolished concrete buildings.

Cement is the modern world's most common material, but it is also a huge source of planet-warming gas .

Back on the CO2 travel kick... equivalent of the day:
A 40km crossing on a BC Ferry from Nanaimo to Vancouver produces the same CO2 per passenger (5kg) as an 1800km high speed train journey from London, UK to Valencia, Spain.

We need to completely rethink travel in Canada but our political leaders are transportation cowards.

Costs and CO2 emissions to get across the Salish Sea for a family of 4. (Nanaimo-Vancouver)

One way totals:
BCF w/ car: $129.95 25kgCO2
BCF w/o car: $80.40 25kgCO2
SeaAir: $502.80 38kgCO2
Hullo Ferry: $180.56 46.8kgCO2

These are the kinds of conversations we should be having around carbon pricing, affordability, and responsibility. Not stupid nonsense "axe-the-tax” click bait crap.

-DE Gov will pay for every carbon ton emissions reduction
-Companies with over 10K carbon emissions eligible
-Steel, glass & cement industries are the main target
-Cap of €1.3 Billion for industry
-Will probably increase demand for hydrogen

Yesterday I asked you all to predict which mode of transportation would have the least CO2 emissions per passenger to get across the water from Vancouver Island to Vancouver. Most of you picked the Catamaran. (https://mstdn.chrisalemany.ca/@chris/112016093668782869)

Here are the actual numbers assuming 100% capacity. ( in kg of CO2 per person)

Big Traditional BC Ferry Car Ferry (1400ppl): 5.3
Fast Catamaran Passenger Ferry (354ppl): 11.7
Small DHC-2 Beaver Float Plane (6ppl): 9.5

I've done the sums regarding CO2 emissions for December 2023 with a heat pump vs December 2022 with gas heating.

Our emissions for heating and hot water were, in the worst case, around a third of what they were a year before, and about a seventh of an average Dutch household in a house like ours.

Claiming zero emissions for Dutch electricity when we all know that most of it is still generated by burning fossil fuel doesn't really make sense, so I've gone with the average CO2 intensity despite our supply supposedly being "green".

He: We are in the middle of a glacial cycle.
Me: Orbital forcing of the last glacial maximum was similar to today’s. Man-made are warming climate. I study climate …
He (interrupts): Humans make only a bit of CO2, it's good for the trees.

Over the past decade, some high-income countries reduced their while increasing their gross domestic product.
New study shows that at the achieved emission reduction rates, these countries would emit 27 times their remaining 1.5°C fair-shares. These rates would on average need to increase by a factor of ten by 2025.
