It's impossible to prove, but I don't think Trump could have won in 2016 without Facebook. Every Republican I've known from high school and college has been very active on Facebook in adulthood. It's where a lot of them get their "news." I've seen former friends and classmates post disinformation there. It's also where QAnon spread (even in seemingly unlikely places, like new moms groups), where Dan Bongino spews #misinformation.
Yesterday Justin Trudeau revealed that agents of the Indian government murdered a Canadian citizen on Canadian soil. When Canadian Sikhs went to post about it on Facebook, the platform removed their posts as a violation of Indian law.
«An advocacy group is calling on Canadians to #boycott#Facebook and #Instagram later this week.
The #FriendsOfCanadianBroadcasting group began asking people Monday to stop posting content on Meta's platforms on Aug. 23 and 24 to show that Canadians won't be pushed around by #Meta, which decided to pull news from #Canadian publishers from its platforms in response to federal legislation.»
X (formerly Twitter) will be removing the ability of users to block others, which is a feature that, according to owner Elon Musk, “makes no sense”.
This change is occurring despite requirements by both Apple and Google for social media apps to provide this feature, with Apple specifically noting that this would be intended for “abusive users”.
Excellent Michael Geist on the clusterfuck we all told you would be Canada's C-18 news bribery and protectionism act. Canadians will suffer. https://www.michaelgeist.ca/2023/06/mediachaos/
@jeffjarvis This moves our news out of the grip of META and the like.To put it another way, Zuckerberg is doing the extortion, not the other way around. Removing click-bait style 'news' from Failbook is a GOOD thing. #BoycottMETA
A strong Fourth Estate is essential in preserving democracy. This bill reduces the power of authoritarian supporting anti-democracy billionaires like Zuckerberg and empowers the free press. #BoycottMETA
All META and other billionaire anti-democracy thieves have to do is pay their fair share. I support this 100%. Fuck Zuckerberg and greeder tech bros. #BoycottMETA
See how this helps to break up monopolies? IT IS AWESOME
Anyway, this helps to end Zillion dollar greed corps/fascists from blocking truth. People will still be able to read news and the better news providers will thrive.
OpenMedia on Bill C-18 and how it only supports corporate media in Canada (action.openmedia.org)
This was OpenMedia’s fix Bill C-18 campaign. It’s unclear if any of this was fixed when it got passed....
