Did you release a game for a retro platform in 2023?

DOS? GBA? Mega Drive? C64? NES? PS1? Wii? Speccy?

Or do you know of one that you really like as a player?

Can you tell me about it within the next 14 hours?

I'm writing a very fast turn-around article for a retro book that I'm handing over first thing tomorrow morning and I want to finish it up by name checking some modern retro games, including those that aren't necessarily on my radar.

I obviously know about notable stuff like The Aching, Briley Witch 2, GoodBoy Galaxy, and Barren Planet, but there's just so much cool software coming out on "dead" platforms and I'd like to know about anything amazing that I might have missed.

It's currently about 15:30 UTC on the 10th of January 2024. That means your cut-off is around 5:30 UTC on the 11th of January. The sooner the better, though.

@HauntedOwlbear Adam is Me (https://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=94605) is a game inspired by Baba is You, originally on Atari 800 (http://aim.atariscene.pl). I released a port for the Atari ST in July 2023 (with the final still pending) and I am also preparing ports for Amiga, Megadrive, Neogeo and Jaguar. LMK if you need more details!

@HauntedOwlbear Just saw this post in timew!

I released ROGUE DECLAN on Amiga in 2023, and it went on to win the AmiGameJam. I have since released a large update and I am currently working on further updates for the upcoming boxed releases in February. 2024 might see a MegaDrive port.

HMU if you need more information :)

@nivrig Awesome, tysm. Very briefly, what tools did you use and/or where would you recommend that budding Amiga/MD devs start?

@HauntedOwlbear Just C, Aseprite and Grafx2 for me on Amiga, and for MD I'm looking at C and SGDK.

Amiga has good game dev options depending on your tastes. There is a dedicated Amiga assembly plugin for VSCode with nice debug tools, Bartman/Abyss VSCode toolset for C and asm, and Scorpion Engine for something high level like a modern game engine that outputs to Amiga and MegaDrive.

All let you work on a modern machine and run emulators for testing. That's how it's done these days.

@HauntedOwlbear Cool. What book is this for?

@HauntedOwlbear I released Barren Planet, a turn-based strategy game for minimal DOS systems (8088, CGA graphics), in April 2023, and an expansion for it later in the year. http://dos.cyningstan.org.uk/downloads/7/barren-planet

@cyningstan I already mentioned Barren Planet as a notable example, which it certainly is! :lila_heart_black:

@HauntedOwlbear Oh I missed that from the original post! In which case, I'd also like to mention another couple of 2023 DOS game that I really enjoyed as a player: Cara Grabs Anitmatter (https://voxel.itch.io/cara-grabs-antimatter) and Demografx (https://coconutpizza.itch.io/demografx).

@HauntedOwlbear I've also got a keyboard library (KEYLIB) that makes it easy enough to track multiple keys in DOS, that's on my web site and my github (github.com/cyningstan). At some point I'll have my PC speaker library uploaded too, but it needs a bit of work first.

People can also check the github for source code of some of my games - there tends be be about a year between releasing the game and getting source code up there.
