In the last 6 days the NY Times has run 4 articles about e-bikes -- all of them negative.

A few other stories the paper might consider:
🔹 E-bikes pollute far less than even electric cars
🔹 Compared to autos, e-bikes pose minimal risk to other people
🔹 Unlike cars, e-bikes provide exercise

quats,

@davidzipper An e-bike can be as fast as a car in city traffic, while using less gas and being far easier to park. And allowing for more vehicles in traffic. Cities would be nuts to not consider them.

@davidzipper Plus the majority of the problems we have with automobiles is not what they are powered by, but the space they take up and all the problems they cause with traffic, infrastructure, and safety (this part is touched on with point 2), based on that. We have destroyed our cities in order to enable the entitlement of everybody owning a personal car, and have pushed everybody else out. EVs solve none of these problems, they only help with pollution, which they don't do well (ala point 1).

@davidzipper @maxmm77 That last one is a legit concern re: cloud-dependent hardware when a company goes belly-up. Those bikes use proprietary parts and when the servers shut down, people will be left with bricked or severely-hampered hardware.

@Aaron @davidzipper I’m getting awfully tired of cloud-dependent hardware in general. Just bought new appliances this week and two are “smart” and I can’t wait for that to bite me in the ass

@maxmm77 @davidzipper Right!?!?

About 10 years ago I bought brand a new fridge (not smart) and just over a year later, the entire back was icing up. Took 2 tech visits, me needing to buy a cooler, unplugging the whole unit 48-hrs prior to 2nd visit to defrost…. All for the tech to open the back-inside panel to replace a 5-cent thermistor part in 15 min. 🫠

Everything is made to fail now. I’d rather have the most basic stuff that lasts 20+ yrs than new junk.

@davidzipper Well, the NYT is a conservative newspaper, so that should not be surprising.
