Denver people!

I'm writing a piece for Mother Jone about how Denver is subsidizing the price of buying an e-bike ...

... and what impact these programs (several other cities are doing 'em now too) have on urban mobility

I'd love to talk to someone in Denver who bought an ebike using Denver's subsidies

Any Mastodon people know someone who fits that bill?

If so, tell 'em to ping me -- love to hear their experience!

I'm clive@clivethompson.net, feel free to forward my email

@clive I got one with a rebate last year, happy to talk

Terrific! Pop me a note at my email clive@clivethompson.net and we'll find a good time to connect!

@clive i have nothing to do with Denver but frankly, that sounds like a great initiative.

@rasmus91

It's really interesting, eh?

@clive i ride my e-bike to work as often as i may (just about 15 miles each way) and i think all big cities should make an effort to get as much car traffic replaced by bikes/ebikes as possible.

Inside the city, getting around on ebike is as fast or faster than going by car.

@rasmus91

100%

I ride an acoustic bike myself around NYC, and in rush hour -- even if I'm going far and deep into the city -- it's nearly always faster than taking public transit, and oftentimes faster than taking a car

Ebikes are a pretty catalytic technology for helping more people replace car trips with cycling

@clive we're doing a similar program in Worcester at MassBike.

@alexisdyslexic

Right on! When does it launch?

Very very cool -- thank you for this!

@clive I was hoping we would be statewide by this point but at least it's something! And seperate project may launch in Boston, Cambridge & maybe Springfield?

@alexisdyslexic

These programs are really spreading like wildfire

Just a half hour ago I was reading the latest Micromobility America newsletter and they mentioned a program in Tampa that I'd not yet heard of ... in its second year!

alexisdyslexic,
@alexisdyslexic@urbanists.social avatar

@clive This is probably more info that you need, but here's a spreadsheet on every ebike program in North America https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1C-sYcwLrQFsr8r2A6RiAP2RwGsBNwr1BKOF_HJvCsVU/edit#gid=0

Aha, I'd been told about that spreadsheet but hadn't seen it -- that's great, thank you!!

@clive ur welcome! I work at MassBike so storing spreadsheets is my day job.

@alexisdyslexic

That piece is great and spot on

I actually argued something similar waaaaay back in ... 2018! https://www.wired.com/story/vehicle-future-bike/

clive,
@clive@saturation.social avatar

@alexisdyslexic

One thing I was wrong about in that piece is that, in the final paragraph, I imply that people riding ebikes don't get the exercise that those riding traditional pedal bikes get

Turns out research suggests the difference isn't so strong

Ebike riders ride longer miles than acoustic bike riders, so they exert less per mile but make it up in volume lol

VirginiaHolloway,

@clive You might want to try using the hashtag which is used by a gathering each Friday evening to curate (if that's the right word) a series of questions and answers about all aspects of cycling.

trouble,
@trouble@masto.ai avatar

@VirginiaHolloway @clive To be clear, if you want to add questions to the hashtag-bikenite (friday after work), The process is to ask your question be included, and add the tag before Wed night, where @ascentale will work with you to get your question posed to the group.

@ascentale @VirginiaHolloway @trouble

Cool, good to know — thank you!!

Kierkegaanks,
@Kierkegaanks@beige.party avatar

@clive we did the same in europe a few years ago. The result was that prices of ebikes exploded and almost only affluent middle income earners got bikes when gas prices went up with circumstances. When gas prices went down they went back to their cars

clive,
@clive@saturation.social avatar

@Kierkegaanks

Yep, I've wondered how much of the money would affect the market

Most of the programs I'm finding here in the US are heavily targeted (50%+ of the vouchers) at low-income folks

but it's still a lot of money to throw at the ebike market, with likely effects on pricing

derek,
@derek@5280.city avatar

@clive Hi Clive! I used the rebate program to help with an ebike for my wife. (I already had one)

I also run a Denver centric mastodon instance.

Hey Derek!

Very cool -- love to learn more. Do you want to ping me at clive@clivethompson.net and we can find a time to chat?

Maybe you should look at examples outside the US? Lots of other places have programs to support ebikes.

@clive@saturation.social avatar

@76c71aae3a491f1d9eec47cba17e22@mostr.pub

I'm definitely going to talk about examples outside the US!

I'm primarily focusing on US cities' experience in this piece, though, given that the bulk of Mother Jones' readership is in the US, and American cities tend to have rather terrible cycling infrastructure 😅 so the challenges here are geographically and culturally specific

lorihc,
@lorihc@qoto.org avatar

@76c71aae3a491f1d9eec47cba17e22@mostr.pub @clive That’s kind of the point, tho? The US tends to focus on electric car subsidies, and it’d be great to hear about an experience with eBikes here.

clive,
@clive@saturation.social avatar

@lorihc @76c71aae3a491f1d9eec47cba17e22@mostr.pub

Yep yep -- I'm particularly interested in thinking about how much mobility bang for the buck a government can get when subsidizing ebikes, compared to the $6 billion-and-climbing that the US federal government has thus far spent subsidizing electric cars ...
