Science Fiction

inkican,

Quick offer to @johnshirley2024, @annaleen, @cstross, @ewdocparris and other established Scifi authors. I'd like to make this an exciting community for scifi fans of all ages - would you be interested in doing an AMA on /m/scifi?

Beyond the usual blah-blah-blah, AMAs on Reddit were powerful ways to connect fans with creators and I'd like to continue that tradition here. If you're interested, feel free to DM me over at https://mastodon.social/@inkican and we can coordinate.

Best wishes,
Ink

The Acolyte Reminds Audiences Star Wars Isn’t Science Fiction (www.cbr.com)

The Acolyte is the latest Star Wars project to stir the fandom. The reaction to the series has been positive, yet some criticisms have taken off online. Some are fair as they relate to the story and execution, but others aren't valid because they misunderstand the essence of Star Wars itself or seek a culture war....

Fringe Brought Leonard Nimoy Out of Retirement (collider.com)

Even if no one has seen an episode or movie in the Star Trek franchise, they know Leonard Nimoy's most famous character. It's the second in command of the USS Enterprise with the pointed ears and the Vulcan salute that is part of pop culture. Nimoy's sci-fi pedigree within his career goes beyond Spock. One of his best sci-fi...

@SFRuminations Interesting! The variety of "source texts", especially - I've learned I enjoy epistolary storytelling, so I suppose piecing together these fragments to figure out what's going on must have a similar effect.

I want to get more into reading #scifi ...but I do not currently know which book(s) might be interesting to me - not deep into the #scifi ecosystem at all.

Is there something you guys would recommend?
I specifically like topics about aliens and space in general (I know, this might be too broad)

Any suggestion is welcome 😎

The #Scifi Book Stores in #Stockholm, #Gothenburg and #Malmö are one of Sweden's most profitable businesses in book retail. They sell tabletop games as well. So at their recent equity issuance I did something unprecedented and bought some stock.

The Stockholm #Scifi Book Store is bang in the middle of the Old Town's main tourist street, where almost every other shop space offers either tacky souvenirs, meals or snacks. Big shop, hundreds of square metres on two floors. It's amazing that they can make that work!

inkican,

@mrundkvist Pics - I must see this place!

Woah.

As a UCLA student I was brought in for a test screening of Alien 3 (they got students all the time), which I thought was terrible, and I haven't watched the sequels since.

This I may watch.

@kurtsh Alien 3 was at Fox. But I saw that Jacob's Ladder showing at Ackerman too!! Man, good times, and crazy movies.

Ackerman was such a vibrant exciting place then. So much going on all day and night. Now it's all at the dorms, and the building closes down early evening!

@artair @virtualbri I know all this. But you only get away with it once. As time went on more and more of the xenomorph was shown (and I've seen a photo of it sitting offstage reading a magazine, as I recall). But then everyone wanted dark sets for no good reason. With recent incarnations of Star Trek (e.g. Picard) being particular offenders. Yeah, @virtualbri already knows my feelings about this ...

inkican,

And we're back! What did you do / play / watch / create while Kbin was offline?

acockworkorange,

Started playing Traveller RPG, and have been rewatching Battlestar Galactica.

I am a Nebula Award finalist, and the Nebula conference is this week. My book, THE INN AT THE AMETHYST LANTERN, is nominated for the Andre Norton Nebula Award for younger fiction (young adult in this case). So what's the book about? I've got you covered: https://jendiagammon.com/2024/03/18/about-the-inn-at-the-amethyst-lantern/

@jendiagammon For those looking at the post above, I just started reading "The Inn at the Amethyst Lantern" (finally) and it is a really a lot of fun! A very imaginative world with unique visuals. It has especially fantastic use of colors - I feel like the images in my mind are vividly painted as I read. I am a big fan but this is my first work and I'm quite digging the vibe. Many more things to say but will save them for when I'm finished!
