What can you get to within a 15-minute walk of your house?

A recent YouGov survey asked Americans what they think they should be able to get to within a 15-minute walk of their house.

Of these choices, I can currently walk to all of them from my apartment, aside from a university (no biggie, I'm not currently studying, although there is a Tafe within walking distance), a hospital, and a sports arena.

How many can you get to with a 15 minute walk from your house?

yuliyan,
@yuliyan@nahe.social avatar

@glennf Is no CMS worse than bad CMS?

yuliyan,
@yuliyan@nahe.social avatar

@glennf So the final content management system is a recursive mutual downgrade into the void. Somewhere, down there content and content management exist in singularity. Which is worse than itself. The badness is incomprehensible.

Ok, I caved and bought that $32 “instant” digital camera that prints on thermal paper.

It’s a weird and wonderful shitty camera. The printer is pretty good, using error diffusion dithering but a bit slow. It’s apparently a 12MP camera that can also do 1080p video on the included 32GB SD card. Obs targeted at kids with the built in filters but there’s something about the immediateness that’s fun about it. Wonder how hackable it is?

"Inspired by Modernists like Le Corbusier, they planted tall buildings in seas of greenery, which they blended with idea from the Garden City movement about balancing urban and rural spaces. Garden Cities, politically, were meant to be shared in terms of ownership and administration, which fit neatly with the politics of the time and region."

Getting lost with sophistication. A step-by-step journey.

  1. I need some kind of dashboard in my #Obsidian app to help me find common things more quickly.

  2. Ideally I want to build it in HTML/CSS. Canvas supports embedding websites! I quickly build a simple layout with some buttons and save it as .html

  3. While embedding websites is easy, embedding .html files is not supported in the same way.

  4. There_must_be_an_extension_for_this.exe

1/x...

yuliyan,
@yuliyan@nahe.social avatar
  1. There is indeed an extension. Now I only need to install it on my three other devices so I can reach the dashboard from anywhere. And keep them up-to-date. And hope they continue to work in the future...

  2. Realisation that more plug-in dependency is bad.

  3. Frustration. I save the html draft in a Markdown file for later. All of a sudden: Rendered HTML. Facepalm. HTML within Markdown is rendered as HTML. 🤦🏻 No need for plug-ins!

  4. Happyness. Hope. Now what about CSS within Markdown?

2/x

yuliyan,
@yuliyan@nahe.social avatar
  1. Inline CSS works. So far so good. But it is inefficient when objects repeat. I want to use classes. Enclosing CSS in <style></style> block does nothing. Shit.

  2. I remember "css snippets". I refactor my inline CSS into a dedicated CSS file, put it in the css snippets folder and there it is! Resilient styling natively rendered within my Dashboard.md.

  3. If it wasn't for the wrapper that contains notes within margins etc....postpone idea.

3/x

yuliyan,
@yuliyan@nahe.social avatar
  1. I found out in a article that you can use frontmatter values to assign a specific CSS file to a markdown note!

https://medium.com/obsidian-observer/dashboard-a-simple-organization-and-navigation-method-for-obsidian-vaults-2b1982d023a0

Conclusion: Everything I need is supported by Obsidian natively and cross-device.
happy nerd noises

Next step: list recent files within the dashboard.

Today I learned you can use Vernissage app that is meant for #Pixelfed but instead login with a #Mastodon instance rendering your timelines into a photo stream.

Awesome alternative way to navigate fedi feeds visually.

The only thing that does not work is posting images to a mastodon account. Maybe in the future?

Thanks @rscottjones for the tip and @mczachurski for the great and minimalist @vernissage

Wondering if I should have a profile or instance specifically for #photography. Would y'all recommend #Mastodon or #Pixelfed for that purpose?

To be more exact, are benefits of Pixelfed worth it, if you only post one to five photos per post? Or does Mastodon do the job just fine?

yuliyan,
@yuliyan@nahe.social avatar

@wolf True, I did not know. I am wondering how a pixelfed post with more than 4 images looks for a mastodon follower

@protonmail I am really tired of the techy look of Proton products. It exhausts my eyes.

yuliyan,
@yuliyan@nahe.social avatar

@protonmail I guess Proton follows the aesthecis of many other tech products with its gloom and its violet-pinkish palettes. I just feel like this aesthetics is severely overused. I associate Proton technically with a secure and easy place for digital private info. Security results ideally in calmness. Not necessarily in techyness. It should feel like a pleasant, well known, cozy shelf rather than a crypto market. Make it feel less like tech, more like a safe personal space.

@42GB Amongst others I really dig track 34 today. The intensity combined with softness sounds so familiar and real to me. Like a more accurate sonification of the emotional ambivalence, the parallel feeling of things. A lot of artists emphasize a single emotion. Patricia, in my ears, manages to project emotional scapes rather than isolated feelings. It's a bit like a neurodivergent brain with a 3,5 mm jack.

@yuliyan@nahe.social avatar

Let's see how this ages:

You don't actually know wether #Threads federating will extinguish the #fediverse via dominance. It's not like Mastodon will stop working now that Threads is there.

Do you run autonomous E-Mail servers? Some of us do. Others use GMail.

Do you run your own website? Many of us do. Others rely on WIX/SquareSpace etc.

Currently I feel like the federation plans are a "could be worse" scenario and a win for decentralised networks.
