I wish people would write some descriptions for their communities

I often browse /all, come across a post that looks interesting but I have no clue what’s it about, so I check the sidebar - and all I find is “An unofficial Lemmy community for X”, " A place to discuss everything about X", or the best kind, “A continuation of r/X from Reddit”....

I just personally wouldn’t want someone duplicating and creating me an account on another instance. Maybe if it’s developed in the future you just get a notification asking if you’d like to follow this community to such and such instance. At that point you get a prompt to accept or deny. I’m fine with that.

I’m running one. It doesn’t require a lot of resources.

If you end up with a crazy substantial amount of users it can get dicey, but if the community is that amazing the donations would probably roll in.

I used to check the front page at least once every day, and occassionally check specific subreddits. Now I don’t look at reddit unless theres some drama, like mods getting purged, then I’d go there and enjoy the drama. Occasionally there will be questions that only reddit has the answer to so I have to reluctantly use it. I...

You’re mixing up words and definitions.

What’s the difference between all those instances?

We have Lemmy.world, Lemmy.ml, beehaw.org, I think even yiffit.net. If I log in using wefwef it asks me where I want to login. And when I make a new account using another instance, it says ”… Lemmy is federated, so you can interact with everything on lemmy.ml even if you’re registered on a different instance.“ So if...

You can use Lemmy Explorer to explore. Type your home instance in the top by tapping the home and it will create all the proper links for tapping and getting to other instances.

Essentially a link like !asklemmy will get you there from any instance. The first part being the community and the second being the instance.

These also should lead to the same community. lemmy.world/c/asklemmy@lemmy.mllemmy.ml/c/asklemmy

Also if you sort by all on an instance that’s populated well you should see most of the fediverse as it is already and can just search within it for what you’re looking for.
