    one thing that stops me from fully embracing 'old man yelling at clouds' were the "old" punk rockers in my town when I was in high school and listening to whatever Husker Du and whatnot and there were these guys who were so old they were probably 26 AHAHAH telling me "Yeah Husker Du were better when they were the Buzzcocks" and all this crap "Why does anyone do hardcore music after The Germs" and while I thank them for turning me onto good music I also thought and still do FUCK YOU

    @puffer @SpaceAce

    When I was young, I wasn't that opinionated about music - I didn't think much about it, other than sometimes getting tired of hearing late 70s country music everywhere.

    But for a couple of years, one of the local stations carried the Dr. Demento show.

    And, since Dr. Demento was sorting music by 'Is it funny?' instead of by genre, the range of musical styles he played by pretty wide.

    So I credit Dr. Demento with my early willingness to listen to different types of music.

    I've always though that 'Sally Simpson' was a great song, but for years I wasn't sure how it really fit into the 'Tommy' album.

    Then I realized that it is largely Pete's proof that he can - in fact - create a coherent story.

    trewhytte,
    @trewhytte@zirk.us avatar

    @flockofnazguls

    'Tommy' as an album is great, but - unless you're Pete Townshend - a lot of it doesn't make sense without added information.

    'Sally Simpson' is a concise, sharply written song with a full story. There are details in it that are not explained in the song, but the concepts are clear, and there's a beginning, middle, and an end, and after that end, you can see that the story will continue.

    @billyjoebowers @flockofnazguls @EvangelosSciFi Be warned that it can be a little tedious in the middle (it's really only an hour long film stretched out for theatrical release) but the ending is worth it.

    I would love for the good people of @synths (and anyone else who might see this, of course!) to go to my album Psychedelic Ghost Stories, select a single song based on the title, listen to it (or as much as your patience allows if it's not your bag), then report back if you think the title is a good fit for the music.

    A simple "Listened to this song, good fit/bad fit" is fine, but you're very welcome to say more/offer details if you want.

    Thanks in advance if you do

    Listened to the whole album (it was in the to-be-listened-to queue already).

    I particularly like the titles for 05 and 06 and felt they fit together well as sequence.

    I don't think the title for 03 quite fits (the music is too cheerful for the Zombie Apocalypse), but I think I actually like it, because it doesn't quite fit.

    The only one I'm not sure about it is track 10 - I don't hear 'siren call' in the music.

    Anyway - listening to the album again, now.

    (The wikipedia article includes a complaint about the 'unfortunately slick mid-'80s production' but I think this album benefits more from its stereotypical 'mid-'80s production' than anything else I listen to.)

    I have no idea why everyone felt they needed to go 1x and get rid of the front derailleur, the least problematic part of the bicycle.

    @billyjoebowers I've had numerous problems with the front derailleur on my 2x - but I think the primary reason I prefer my 1x is that it let me have a big lever on the left for the dropper post. Left hand works the dropper, right hand changes gears, brain doesn't have to do too much thinking about it.

    @flockofnazguls @ordosmarkzero in the long form, part of the appeal of the good bits is the lead-in, where I'm listening to something that's okay, but not special, then it becomes really cool. So I guess I would be looking for something that's long enough to be good, then get even better.

    I just got an interesting question about text on menus.

    It bothers the questioner when things aren't capitalized on menus or there's no punctuation.

    I think they want me to say menus should follow standard English rules, but I've never been able to get worked up about menus. The "errors" or pretentious formatting are all just part of the restaurant experience to me.

    What do you think about text styling on menus?

    @grammargirl Restaurant menu descriptions are essentially little poems -- so, yes, anything goes.

    The opposite of "orderly" but in a good way

    Chaotic Vibrant Bountiful Abundant

    I do not love the word "eclectic" - it sort of captures what I'm talking about, but it feels trivializing

    trewhytte,
    @trewhytte@zirk.us avatar

    @miksimum I like 'Abundant' - 'orderly' seems to also imply 'minimal' - so 'Abundant' suggests a sense of beyond 'order'.

    ('Vibrant' is also good - I once had an extended family member describe the interior paint colors of my home as 'Vibrant' - she did not mean it as a compliment - but we were quite pleased with the description.)

    @puffer @Robotron Yes - that's a surprise!

    I saw a lot of movies in '82 and '83, and could tell you something about the plot or style of most of them, but not the date that I saw them.

    However - I saw Liquid Sky on Christmas Eve, 1982, in a theatre with no heat, and remember nothing about it, only that I was very cold.

    (The soundtrack is available for streaming, and is interesting - if not all good - but the Wiki article about the movie does not make me interested in watching it again.)
