Scientist cited in push to oust Harvard’s Claudine Gay has links to eugenicists (www.theguardian.com)

Rufo described Jonatan Pallesen as “a Danish data scientist who has raised new questions about Claudine Gay’s use – and potential misuse – of data in her PhD thesis” in an interview published in his newsletter and on the Manhattan Institute’s City Journal website last Friday....

You are technically correct, but the practical thing to do is abandon the term when it’s not forced/tragic. No reason to rehabilitate the term.

And a fun but important fact is that genetic and heritable diseases are not necessarily the same. I went too long as a clinician conflating the two: veritasint.com/…/difference-between-genetic-and-h… (corporate link but correct and well written)

thereticent,

France has flirted with far right nationalism for at least 25 years, fyi

thereticent,

17+ years for me. November would be 18. Since the exodus, Reddit looks like a shadow of itself, but that could be that I only see the frontpage now. What a shame.

What is the best music player that lets you see your collection by album covers?

There are some really nice music players out there but most of them work in this kind of tree way where they show you a small image of the album, and below all of the songs, or worst, directly show you all of the songs. I generally browse by looking at album covers and there I decide what to listen, so being able to look at the...

thereticent,

You could use foobar2000 with “Album Art Grid View”

Edit: Ah, freeware (BSD license) but not open source.

thereticent,

This is the weirdest complaint. The post showed up in your popular/active feed because it got popular/active. It wasn’t targeted to you, and the poster was not addressing you. The post was clearly addressed to users who post on /c/196.

Being annoyed at how the service works is not a good reason to be combative with the poster, and it certainly isn’t a good reason to share your opinions about trans folk being a problem when they get aggressive. Not adding up.

thereticent,

I’m not part of that community either. I’m truly amazed at the number of indignant comments like yours, which demonstrate that you took the post as addressed to you. It obviously wasn’t. It was explicitly addressed to posters on 196. I’d recommend being less self-centered, but if you disagree, I’m sure that community would be happy to see you go.

thereticent,

If it helps at all, AC capacitors are extremely easy to replace, so if you had an extra or two on hand, that might save you some headache and money later. Tell you friends. I hope you can stay cool!

thereticent,

Cory Doctorow bookends my use of reddit. About 20 years ago I started to read him at boingboing, where I learned about del.icio.us (he had an obsession with “folksonomy”, or organization by user-created tags), the social bookmarking site. From there I learned of reddit and made an account soon after that was possible (it was just the frontpage for a bit). That was 5 Nov 2005, and while I thought I would stay until or after my account was old enough to vote in the US, I’ve let it go. I was user #497, same username as here. Finally, Cory D’s concept of enshittification has found it’s apotheosis, and it’s a bittersweet goodbye for me.

Thanks for reading. Keep it human.
