I sometimes write (FOSS) software, when I feel like it. I use NixOS (btw).

US politics are so fucked up.

Yeah like there's only two (meaningful) candidates. One of them wants a fucking fascist regime and the other can't remember what he ate for breakfast...

so, dear #apple people, it's 21st century and most of you probably have an external ultrawide or two in addition to that hidef square of a display that comes integrated with your mac laptops, with a multitude of windows open, maybe even yabai to tile them almost like a grown-up desktop env…

…and still you insist that having app menu someplace else than on the said app's window is a cool modern ui feature?..

thegreenguy,

@tivasyk

Am not Apple fan and don't really like Apple (I do have an iPad though). Honestly, the tob-bar is a really good design, adding important status information and app controls into a convenient and consistent place.

Ok, so recommend me a nice #Lemmy instance focusing on #FOSS #linux and #selfhosting ?

thegreenguy,

@FarLine99 @jarno

It's good tho to join an instance focusing on your interests, or a local instance.

zenforyen, to mastodon

I still have #no clue #how to use #hashtags on #mastodon effectively. On #reddit at least there are topical subs, that concept even I can understand. On the other hand, it's sometimes hard to pick the right sub. The opposite problem, I guess.

Can't we just have a smart network showing stuff to the best places? Oh wait... We've been there, and it broke the internet.

Algorithmic feeds would be really nice... in a world where they are not profit-driven attention stealing machines. One can dream.

thegreenguy, (edited )

@zenforyen You'll get used to it. Do know, tho, that #Mastodon is really more similar to #Twitter not #Reddit. For that, use #Lemmy or #Kbin. (Lemmy is more mature tho).

Edit: just read your comment about trying Mastodon, but not as a Reddit alternative. Oh, well.

thegreenguy,

@zenforyen The main developers of #Lemmy have been reported to have some leftist/fascist views. However that doesn't really impact the content on most instances, as they aren't run by them.

Check out join-lemmy.org/instances. See if your country has an instance or maybe there is an instance specialising in a niche you are interested in (this won't affect the content you can see, in general). I would avoid lemmy.ml (run by the leftist/fascist devs). I'm personally on sopuli.xyz btw.

There has been much chatter recently about working on its own rival called . Well, Apple's artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot is apparently years away from release. https://tchlp.com/3DEgze6

thegreenguy,

@techhelpkb Even if they release it I can almost guarantee it's not gonna be called "AppleGPT". More likely something like "Siri Chat".

I tried this, and wow, it looks so much better.

#gnome #linux

thegreenguy,

@Ultra

Probably will, considering it's already a working prototype.

thegreenguy, to fediverse

The #Fediverse being small (compared to other platforms) often means people see people's posts. Like, whenever I toot something on #Mastodon, in less than 5 minutes I get people boosting or replying. Or I could post or comment something on #Lemmy and I start getting upvotes in like no time.

@FineFindus

It's a really good app. I just like the UI better than #trunksapp which is what I previously used. It's also #OpenSource

thegreenguy,

@Ultra @FineFindus

It has more features than the official app.

thegreenguy,

@Ultra

Yeah. I mean it being just "better" than the official app is kinda Moshidon's whole shtick.

Some keen eyed viewers noticed I had a few extensions and tweaks added to my GNOME desktop since my last workflow video, so here they are!

  • Places menu, to add a bookmarks menu in the top bar
  • Search Light, to have GNOME Search accessible in a « not full screen » capability, useful sometimes when I still need to keep an eye on something while searching
  • Dash 2 dock, because I find it useful on a laptop. Not necessary, but useful sometimes
  • the Kora icon theme, to change things up a bit!
thegreenguy,

@albituga_

I'm pretty sure his workstation is also on #GNOME and I think he's using most of the same extensions. Not sure about distro tho.

thegreenguy,

@Ultra @albituga_

I don't think he's daily driving it, as he often tries different distros

APPLE makes a way to easily transfer files to your iPhone. They make a SD Card Reader that connects directly to your iPhone through the lightning port. This does work with transfering pictures, but I do not think it works for ring totones. The SD Card just shows up in the Files App as another file source. To check it out and for more information, here is a link... Lightning to SD Card Camera Reader

thegreenguy,

I can just plug my #Android #Phone into my #Computer and transfer files, without needing to #Buy an external #SD #Card #Reader.

thegreenguy,

@graphite idk lmao, that post is kinda old though

@NotAanArtist

I'm don't have much experience with #DigitalArt (outside of drawing some quick stuff in #Procreate on my #iPad), but I don't think you need that much power (again, I'm by no means an expert), so it really boils down to what software you use/plan on using and your OS preferences.

You don't need to use the official Mastodon apps, they're not the best way to use Mastodon. The official apps only arrived last year, and they were intended as "Fisher Price My First Mastodon" things with a restricted set of features.

Third party apps have been around longer than official ones, and include way more features. You can sign in with the same account on all apps.

:android: On Android try Tusky, Fedilab, Megalodon, Tooot

:apple_inc: On iPhone/iPad, try Toot!, Ice Cubes, Ivory, Mona

thegreenguy,

@feditips

@trunksapp is another great #Android client

matkoya, to mastodon German

Q: I see some people with the same account name on different #Mastodon instances.
Are these connected or how does that work?

thegreenguy,

@matkoya

They aren't and AFAIK there isn't a way to link them. Totally different people could have the same account name on different instances. But you shouldn't need multiple accounts, because of the #Fediverse.
