@polpo
Quick question about the MPU401 emulation on the PicoGUS 2.0, is that just a pass through to the MIDI out port?

theLobdegg,

@root42 @polpo
Ok, so no external MIDI module necessary. But do I take it that also means no UART mode support?

theLobdegg,

@root42 @polpo
Hmmm... Just trying to figure out why MPU401 mode doesn't seem to play anything.

theLobdegg,

@root42 @polpo
Oh, I do need an external midi module. Sorry, I was under the impression it would synthesize the midi music itself. I do not have any external midi modules atm. something I hope to rectify later this year.

@polpo
Out of curiosity are there any plans for an Adlib/Sound Blaster 16 firmware file or was that too much for the pico?

theLobdegg, to random

I think I figured out which computer gets the PicoGUS. Let's hope I can fix any issues stemming from the PicoGUS conflicting with the onboard sound chip.

Holy crap, I found a temperature conversion app I made as a teenager back in the year 2000.

By "found" I mean someone archived it and put it in a bundle of "small apps" on their website as a download.

It still runs in Windows 11 haha

theLobdegg,

@Tijn
2000? Was it programmed in Visual Basic?

Just in case someone here knows a good candidate, we at @HadroSoft are looking for an artist to create the box art for the Aching. The artist would need to be comfortable doing scenery artwork equally if not more so than character art, and must be comfortable with horror and dark themes.

I used to hate git because I didn't know how to use it.

Now I hate git because I know how to use it.

theLobdegg, to random

The funny thing about git is I can see how it was intended to be used and if used that way, how effective a tool it can be for tracking and consolidating code changes.

If used correctly.

Sadly, it seems it's fan base does an excellent job at obfuscating it's intended methodology and relies on the notion that simply including it is enough to make every project better, with or without training.

This is unfortunately never born out as true in practice.

theLobdegg,

This post brought to you by a coworker over writing my contributions because he doesn't know he needs to pull/fetch so his local copy matches remote. I have no doubt it was done in innocence because every experience I have had with git has been littered with similar struggles all stemming from a total lack of effective communication on how to correctly use git. I can't bring myself to blame the team leads of these projects because I'm convinced they don't know how to use git themselves.

theLobdegg,

In fact, from what I've seen no one seems to ever learn how to correctly use git without making the same mistakes as everyone else, costing hours, days, or even entire months of work.

I blame the creators of the tool, as it shows how ineffective their communication and documentation has been. I myself have had difficulty looking through official docs because the git team seems averse to clearly defining terms relying on a sort of trial by fire for users to learn.

open question: is there anyone interested in reading a (proposed) blog about starting a new game studio?

this would include every aspect of building the business... from design to coding to art to steam/gog/humble to finances. the entire experience of starting a game studio from scratch.

theLobdegg,

@vga256
I think just the Steam stuff alone could be invaluable let alone the complete end to end.

Seriously, selling on Steam seems to have such a steep learning curve!

So I just saw someone react to a post chastising Elon Musk for charging a minimum fee to post tweets followed by a jest about "so much for free speech" with "you have to pay for a stamp, is that infringing on free speech?" And...wow, what a take.

I kinda love posts shitting on Musk because it inevitably brings out the idiots hiding here so you know who to block. And if their instance is full of nitwits like that, all the better. A good mod can just cull the lot of 'em all at once.

why selling stuff on marketplace is always weird "hey can i pick it up at 1am?" "can you send it using uber but you pay?"

theLobdegg,

@kiwa
Wait, someone asked you to pay an Uber to deliver something they bought from you? Like, that's shipping, bro! Shipping ain't free!

Can anyone recommend a good chat app to replace Discord? Is there a good self hosted one? Like Ventrillo but for text chat instead of voip?

@polpo
Out of curiosity, the PicoGUS wouldn't happen to be a good candidate for a half height PCI card, would it? I don't really know too much about the rigors and demands that come with designing a PCI device. I ask because I keep coming across those little low powered micro tower computers that were trendy in the mid 00's and they've always got a standard PCI card slot but only like a 2" clearance or something.

Recently I started a new job. I'm working for a small privately owned company as a developer. This is the first time I've officially had the word developer next to my name at a day job. I'm working in Visual Basic which isn't ideal, but I think I'm actually having fun. I feel productive and am getting satisfaction from my work.

Feels really weird!

Just finished the barebones firmware of #TalosES. It includes a BIOS, loader, monitor, and a simple assembler. Now on to writing a good demo and wrapping up the project, so I can do #TalosCR, the low-cost, single-board, SMD version!
https://www.thebyteattic.com/p/talos-es.html

theLobdegg,

@TheByteAttic
Will the smd version still be a Borg cube?

theLobdegg,

@TheByteAttic
Not that I didn't expect that to be the answer, but it could have been a bit humourous to have a lower cost Borg cube. XB

Laughing at my PC gamer memories of always having my drive split into 2 partitions. One as the active OS and one where I stored the files I cared about. And what else was on that second partition? Well a copy of my Win98 install media! Why, you ask? Because Windows would ask for it's install media ANY time you did ANYTHING on the system level. Why on the second partition? Well that's the same reason you had a second partition to begin with: for when you had to format and rebuild Windows.

theLobdegg,

@dec_hl @polpo
It builds character! Puts hair on your chest. Pretty lucky then that everyone is getting so into werewolves and furries these days. XB
