Today I took the day off work and went with my mother to the Melbourne Flower and Garden Show. It was a beautiful sunny day and a perfect temperature for a stroll in the Carlton Gardens to see the exhibits.

There were also plants for sale including the Wollemi Pine (photographed here). It was exciting seeing so many of them and feeling their leaves. I wish our time backyard was big enough to grow one.

I find it very frustrating to see people drinking coffee from takeaway cups inside a cafe, when they could have ordered it "to have here" in reusable ceramic cups. The smallest effort required. [sigh]

Then there was the time that Jane was sitting next to one of the architects of the “African Gangs” hysteria, when they lost their “blue ribbon” seat because the electorate decided that they were a bunch of racist arsehats who couldn’t be trusted to run the local canteen. And Jane offered commiserations in the way that only Jane (and all of the facsimiles of Jane*, who seem to speak and act exactly the same) could - with a kind of dispassionate disdain that comes with sitting next to someone who makes your utterances sound totally inhuman and deranged…

Yesterday I went to Cradle Mountain (where I saw a baby wombat) and noticed a plant on the Dove Lake track that I didn't know. Turns out it is a Green Mountainlily, a plant endemic to Tasmania that has only one close relative species which grows on New Caledonia.

It is an ancient species, dating back 120 million years and is easy to miss as it doesn't look anything special.
