I can't believe an Icelandic newspaper did this pun.

To explain it:

  • Probably in Icelandic is Líklega.
  • There's a common phrase that is used to mean "probably": "ef að líkum lætur" (in all probability can)

Also:
Lík means corpse.

An article about a morgue closing used that phrase as the title.
"Closes this summer in all probability"
"Closes this summer if all corpses can"

@alda @olafurw Yes, it's Akureyri, and yes, Morgunblaðið sacked all its proofreaders (you see the lack of declension in the last couple of words), so the heading is most probably an unwanted pun [possibly by some green summer recruitment]...

Your gym's treadmill could just as well let you scan a PDF417 or DataMatrix barcode on your phone to get basic stats for your run instead of insisting on being internet connected and you using the manufacturer's app.

A common comment on this post was that I hadn't explained labour arbitrage clearly. Many thought I was making an argument against productivity or reusable code. So I added a section to better explain what I mean

    Dites; Piwigo est traduit en plusieurs langues, et l'interface se met automatiquement sur celle du système d'exploitation.
    Vos categories sont bien gardées en francais, mais y-a le bouton "Souvenirs" qui semble un peu étrange dans son contexte:

    @yanncphoto Curieux; c'est déjà traduit en Islandais. Sais pas quand ca a été fait, mais j'ai vu que la dernière publication du plug-in remonte á 2022.

    @yanncphoto Confirmé que ca fonctionne bien. Reste petites ajustements dans la traduction/localisation islandaise concernant les dates, pense que c'est plutôt en Piwigo que en le plug-in.

    @yanncphoto J'ai um peu fouillé; c'est plus complique que ca. Tous les dates en Piwigo sont normalisées en nominative: "Photos de Vendredi 17 Avril 2015".

    En Islandais on veut trois choses en ce cas: Interdiction totale de majuscules á l'intérieur de la phrase, mettre un point après le numero du jour (17. apríl 2015), et de décliner le nom du jour "föstudaginn" au lieu du "Föstudagur".

    Je suis en train de regarder si ca peut se manipuler dans le code, mais suis pas trop optimiste.

    @yanncphoto T'es pardonné; 🥴 les déclinations des articles (4 phases en islandais, beaucoup plus en langues comme le finnois) est notre châtiment héréditaire, comparable aux verbes irréguliers en français...

    @baldur My favourite is when "logging" [as in creating a registry of actions in computers] is consistently translated to "skógarhögg" [as in chopping down trees], thinking that since Google being a technically biased entity, it would mostly be the other way around.

    Anyway, got a special folder called "Þýðingaslummur"where I collect the worst offending phrases, put some samples below:

    @rysiek @baldur This is maybe not as stupid as it seems; originally at Alþingi in Þingvellir, the laws were recited orally in high voice for all during the parliament - even perhaps with intonation like while singing.
    But I seriously doubt that GT goes to such depths in its reasoning... :emoji_squint:

    @pasqualeberesti @eriko_hana La première es celle de Rio Tinto á Kapelluhraun, la deuxième est celle de Fjarðaál á Reyðarfjörður (dans les fjords de l'est), et la troisième a été projetée á Grundartangi (en Hvalfjörður, pas loin d'Akranes) en continu de la fonderie d'Elkem (connais pas le status du projet, qui semble au frigo pour le moment).

    It seems like the owners of the lot next door decided to destroy the trees and bushes that have been one of the few nice things visible outside our window with our courtyard being used as a storage space for construction equipment for years.

    Is this even allowed? Aren't there permits that need to be applied for here in #Berlin?

    @pasqualeberesti @eriko_hana Hélas, dans le nord de l'Islande on paye pas 750 couronnes pour une chocolatine gonflée comme lá, autour du lac Mývatn ils feraient l'effort pour que ça dépasse les 1000 couronnes....
