People ask me what has changed after coming to terms with an adult autism diagnosis. And while that is a long and deeply complex series of answers, one thing I can say is that I don't feel as much shame for my hyperfixations.

They said, doing their morning Finnish lesson while listening to Old Gods of Asgard and drinking coffee from an Oh Deer Diner mug.

Hey Mastodonians! I'm thinking of getting into vinyl (records, I already have enough clothing) as a way of trying to make the music listening "special" again.

Streaming music is great! Almost everything I want when I want it, in super high fidelity! But music doesn't feel special any more. Ubiquity feels like it has made everything into background music. Going out to physically get the new Nick Cave, for example, and physicaly put it into a device with the express intent of listening to it had a sense of weight and ritual I'm missing.

Does this make sense to any of y'all? Have you wrestled with something similar? I don't need a new expensive hobby, but I miss when music had weight.

Stephen King: guys did you hear there’s a video game campfire too?
Mary Shelley: that sounds like some nerd shit
King: no no there are lots of cool people there
King: hideo kojima, sid meier, bob bates
King: the 2 guys from andromeda
Shelley: [cracking knuckles in anticipation]

@bitterkarella As an old school Sierra geek I'm dying.

Dear security people: Is there any good reason in this day and age that an online order form should force me to paste my email into two different fields as some kind of "check"?

strangetree,

@annaleen As others have said, it's a largely ineffectual means of trying to improve data capture -- in this case your email -- quality. The amount of bad emails that get submitted on forms is staggering in my experience.

@neurovagrant I'm not taking that bet.

Question for people in the USA: why would someone want to use a regular bank rather than a credit union for personal banking? Am I missing something?

    strangetree,

@jerry Recently, a simple transaction that would take literally 5 seconds online at my old bank took 3 days with forms being sent back and forth at my credit union.

I still love my CU and have no regrets about switching over. But they are not as streamlined or technically advanced.

For many years, I considered myself a Techno-Optimist. Even after I moved to the Bay, started working in tech and became quickly disenchanted with many of the ideas I once championed. Even after seeing how the sausage was made, I never really gave thought to getting out from under that umbrella.

Until about 10 minutes ago after reading that damn manifesto.

I am experiencing a pulsating black void in my head, and I do not care for it. Someone pass me a joint and a less crapsack futurepresent, please?

@unknownbinaries @neurovagrant Oof. Infected while getting a booster. Bleak. Hoping things continue to be bearable. May I ask why they talked you out of Pax? (I've been paranoid since spending a day jn the ER last week.)

welp the plague finally got me

the absolute idiot irony of probably having caught it while masked & actively getting the stupid booster is just. i got nothing.

    strangetree,

@neurovagrant @unknownbinaries Yikes. It sounds like this new variety is really making the rounds. I wish you both a speedy and full recovery.

@neurovagrant Absolutely my favourite part so. Miles above most of the other quests I've done. (Though the Freestar Ranger one is pretty solid.)

is media, part eleventy billion: I clicked on a post that completely enraged me, and returned to my timeline full of inchoate plans to write something pointlessly scathing. Immediately I saw like ten people having a nice, helpful conversation about software configurations. Lost the urge to yell and continued on with my day.

    strangetree,

@annaleen It's one of the things I cherish most about Masto. What keeps me here.

Can't believe I have pre-interview jitters. I used to be cool as a cucumber before an interview. Now I'm assuming I'm going to forget everything about infosec and consulting by tomorrow morning.

I'm so excited to share that my book, HOW INFRASTRUCTURE WORKS: INSIDE THE SYSTEMS THAT SHAPE THE WORLD, will be out on October 17th of this year, on Riverhead Books. It's about the globe-spanning systems we've built to meet our needs: what systems like electricity, water, transportations and telecommunications have in common, how they work, and what needs to change to make them resilient, functional and equitable.

You can preorder it now at:

    strangetree,

@debcha Congratulations! I am so excited to finally read this!

Very disappointed that it is coming down to a choice of working for the DHS or unemployment.

(It's not really a choice is it?)

    strangetree,

@jerry Yeah, definately not the best time to be on the market.

Just had one of my worst job interviews ever. I've been interviewing for many years and I have not face planted like that before. Please send a cure for my imposter syndrome, a mug of hot chocolate, and some vague indicator I belong in this industry. (And/or a job.)

    strangetree,

@neurovagrant Thanks. It was 50% them (surprise tech interview in what I was told was a "get to know you" call) and 50% me. (I should be able to crush a surprise tech interview anyway.) Was completely humiliating.

But it's making me be more selective about what I'm considering ATM, which seems like a terrible move while looking at a ticking clock in this market but...

...i mean, come on, does that not look like a 69 icon to other people? am I really that uniquely internet-damaged?

    strangetree,

@neurovagrant It's weird, that is both a terrible icon that communicates no useful information to users but is also somehow pretty... nice.

Daydreaming about traveling coast-to-coast with a regularly scheduled airship service. It’d take a few days to get from eg Boston to Seattle, so I’d want wifi and a sleeper cabin (and a view, of course). And it’d use vastly less energy than flying, since the lift comes from buoyancy not speed.

    strangetree,

@debcha That really is the dream. I've wanted something like that to exist since I was a kid.
