@aras I don't know why, but I though you were older! (I'll be 41 in a few months). Maybe it's because all the amazing things you've done. You rock! ๐Ÿ’ช

Whenever I open up Blender to try and learn the UI, this is what if feel like to me, and I've used 3DSMax a lot in the past (I actually have 2 finished courses in 3D modeling, 0 completed in coding)

soy1bonus,
@soy1bonus@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@djlink I have the 'industry standard' shortcuts and that helps a bit, but it still uses the blender ones on some places.

My workflow is doing as much as I can in Geometry Nodes though, that way I can sort of avoid 'using Blender' ๐Ÿ˜‹

But it feels good to leave 3DSMax behind, Blender feels more modern.

I just played bootleg Hanzo in bootleg Overwatch. This game is hilarious
#Paladins #videogames #gaming

soy1bonus,
@soy1bonus@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@Ypsilenna I really like Paladins, even if you can tell they had a way smaller budget than OW. But it has some really interesing ideas (like the card deck to customize the characters).

soy1bonus,
@soy1bonus@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@Ypsilenna Yes, it's more of a cozy game. My friends play more OW, but I try Paladinds from time to time. I also love support, but will basically pick whatever role needs to be filled, as I'm equally bad at all of them ๐Ÿ˜…

soy1bonus,
@soy1bonus@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@Ypsilenna tanking is actually kind of chill in OW. Nobody bothers you much so I usually try defending the other players and it usually works. Yesterday's patch made OW a bit more like Paladins though (in terms of not getting instakilled!) it feels pretty nice.

soy1bonus,
@soy1bonus@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@Ypsilenna most of them except doom or ball. It's not always but tanks just require too much effort to kill, and sometimes people just go for the other teammates. Or maybe someone just goes in front all the time. If I get genjis/tracers/reapers on my team I usually pick Zarya and it works great ๐Ÿ˜‹

Dithering is one of those techniques that is not much used these days in games, because we have real transparency, but it does give stuff a nice distinct look. #gamedev

soy1bonus,
@soy1bonus@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@djlink Not much used? I think it's used A TON, particularly on hair, but it usually looks almost like transparency because of the TAA (if it's done correctly).

a lot of issues I see on initial stages of consoles ports are due to PCs being so much faster that we can get away with it. Doesn't even look like an issue until you dig deeper and the root cause actually makes sense. It's just that desktop PCs will just brute force most stuff.

soy1bonus,
@soy1bonus@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@djlink We're still rocking Nvidia 1060's with 3GB of VRAM. And we have a 1st gen Mac Mini to keep things in check even more!

soy1bonus,

@djlink but it's kind of standard recommendations (that you can turn off). Not nice, but not what I would expect from something called 'AI Service'. Hope it doesn't go much far though...

please don't make default game settings uncapped FPS/no vsync, a lot of people won't check for those settings and just puts extra pressure on hardware.

I finally got a copy of Diablo 4. I worked on the game and maybe unsurprisingly, introduced blue noise to the project (there is a lot more use of it than when I left the team!).
I'm playing a lightning mage and the game is pretty fun so far!
I stumbled on the butcher and he wrecked me though hehe

soy1bonus,

@demofox it's fairly fun altough there's too much open world and not that many dungeoning. But the visual are fantastic!

In 2 we're distorting the far away terrain, to avoid it being too flat and 'blocky'. And it doesn't seem to break the seams so much!

reduz, (edited ) to random

For those using C# in Godot. C# works by making .cs scripts you assign to nodes (like GDScript).
This is a bit slower with virtual functions such as _Process, overriding low level areas of the engine (like audio streams) is harder to maintain the code.

A future alternative is to make C# classes like extensions: you just inherit the node like a script, but select class from the Add Node dialog instead of assigning a script. This approach makes C# code faster and easier to maintain.

WDYthink?

soy1bonus,
@soy1bonus@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@reduz faster and easier to maintain sounds good. And we would still have gdscript if we want it the other way.

@djlink I guess it's time to check out Godot for real... We released many games on XNA back in the day, but we need the tools of a proper engine, at this point.
