I'm honestly pretty tired of the more money/more eyes/more time/more something would have prevented the xz backdoor. It is unbelievably optimistic to think the community could just be a little better and that would defuse the efforts of a damn nation state.

Which Easter are Christians celebrating? The Bible has multiple versions and they are not consistent. https://ffrf.org/component/k2/item/18418-leave-no-stone-unturned

The worst thing about the xz backdoor is that the same process could easily be replicated on a wide set of other projects. The whole software ecosystem is based on trust that is often undeserved.

@sudoedit Vulnerabilities don't have to have a runtime cost. This was luck, more than the system working as intended.

@mmstick @soller I know that both GNOME and KDE do shared virtual desktops across monitors, but is COSMIC going to have per monitor virtual desktops like most tiling window managers. I don't think I've seen the approach mentioned in any of the COSMIC blogs.

Perhaps I’m showing my age, but the density of games that were able to chart completely new territory is impressive.

Dune II - 4X strategy

Sim City - simulation games

Star Control II - open world procgen

Doom - first-person shooter

Monkey Island (or Age of the Tentacle) - adventure

Civilization - strategy

The ability to theme #COSMIC apps is so far beyond anything else out there...

@edfloreshz "far beyond anything else out there..." - is not true. We will continue to build out theming options but it is still constrained by a desire for consistency. For example, having a minimum contrast for text or ensuring the colors of certain components all match. In Qt and manually created GTK CSS themes, all manner of changes are possible, even ones that are not consistent.

COSMIC Store is coming along quickly, though there is still a lot left to do. It loads nearly instantly, because it uses bitcode to cache appstream data in an optimized format. It uses very little memory compared to the Pop Shop. Searches can be performed live as they are done in parallel. Searching for "e" takes 5.5 ms on my desktop and returns 4601 results.

@emeric Well... I have run the COSMIC editor on a processor even older than 25 years ;-)

I definitely believe old computers shouldn't be slowed down by new code.

I'm convinced Intel is trolling with the GPIO registers on MTL-U.

The port IDs have changed. Are there any reasons for the port IDs to change, maybe a different thing uses the old ones? Nope!

The offsets that port data start at are different for every GPIO community. Is there any conflict requiring these to change? Nope!

Most groups have 24 items. One has 23. Another has 22. Is there any logic to this? Nope!

soller,
@soller@fosstodon.org avatar

The GPIO communities are 0, 1, 3, 4, and 5. The port IDs are very easy to remember

0: 0xD1
1: 0xD2
3: 0xD3
4: 0xD4
5: 0xD5

I'll leave the problem as an exercise to the reader.
