I was yelling about the NAR Christians for the last decade in Singapore, where local acolytes also have implemented versions of this theology (there’s a cinema with evangelical Christian certified content for example)

You can’t divorce that movement from the parent theology, which is this stuff. Except in Asia it becomes 80% about prosperity, 5% about God, 15% about MLM

It goes back a long way. In the 70s, American Pentecostal ‘prophets’ (Billy Graham etc) were disgusted by the roaring 60s / free love / anti-war movements and they took to Asia to find the next billion believers. There were large cult-like ‘revivals’ all over. There were already mainline traditional Christians, but these events created a different breed of believers. From there, 2 generations of mega churches. Add to that the Australian Christian incursion from Hillsong

My family was caught up in this (my parents converted in the 70s). I grew up completely divorced from my culture’s traditional beliefs. The faith and its practices were central. We could not, for example, give offerings to our dead relatives (even as a sign of respect. Because all pre-Christian beliefs are ‘devil worship’). Later as an increasingly political person I saw the links between conservatism, warmongering, bigotry and the church movement I know well

The reason why many people in this cult will not see the damage their movement is causing is, this heretic version* of the religion also functionally acts as self-help / therapy for the people who need it the most. If the music feels good, and everyone is happy, can it really be as harmful as people think?

Most can’t connect the dots.

  • Many ways to debunk their beliefs in mainline Christian theology; many core tenets are also considered heretical

I don’t think the average person who likes going to this form of church is actively plotting to bring about bigotry and harm to the world.

But in failing to see how their church leaders and related movements cause harm and oppression, runs counter to all religious exhortations to ‘bring light into the world’. And actively declining to investigate how their beliefs and practices may cause harm, is complicity.

A few days ago I told someone ‘I used to be deathly afraid of cats’

They asked how I fixed that

I said, ‘I became a lesbian’

(Exposure helped. Mila is my first cat, though a decade before I lived with a few cats who were Cookie’s friends as well. Then when we got Mila she pretty much gave me no choice… cuddle times all the time)

On a side note I’m also starting to see more alcohol-free spaces in the queer community (at least with the queer women). Among the younger people it is definitely acceptable to be no alcohol at all. As someone who went sober myself that’s very nice to see

skinnylatte,
@skinnylatte@hachyderm.io avatar

This feels like a big cultural shift. I think elderly queer millennials like me were the last group to see alcohol as ‘even slightly cool’. Our younger friends all have totally different relationships with booze now. I think that’s true in and out of the queer community

My lovely sib has a husband who sees himself in the stereotypical role of the breadwinner and leaves her to deal with all the housekeeping, child-rearing, domestic and administrative labour. Completely unfair situation.

Friends, especially people who partner and live with men, what is the BARE MINIMUM? The basic package, if you like, of men's contribution to domestic life?

I will compile suggestions here into a Google Doc and circulate that for the menfolk.

To a significant degree, San Francisco seems to be staking its economic future on "AI" companies. It feels like our city is making a deal with the devil because these companies are, 1, overhyped and many of them will likely collapse, and 2, clearly bad for the world: plagiarizing, resource-hungry bullshit generators.
