I bought a copy of How Git Works by @b0rk yesterday and it’s a beautifully designed, clear guide which is densely packed with great information. Highly recommended if, like me, you are not one of those people who already knows Git in ridiculous detail.

Since HMV shipped it promptly and Royal Mail decided that 24-hour delivery was better than 48, I’m settling down to watch a glorious looking and sounding 4K release of The Italian Job (not officially released until Monday).

I know I’m a few years behind but I’ve just finished watching Chernobyl (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7366338/).

What an astonishing dramatisation and what a fantastic explanation of what went wrong in the final episode.

If you’ve not seen it and have the chance to then definitely do.

As a follow-up to my recent posts about a Raspberry Pi NAS, there is now an official NVMe HAT (single drive only): https://www.raspberrypi.com/documentation/accessories/m2-hat-plus.html#about

But the most exciting bit for me is the ability to boot from NVMe rather than SD: https://www.raspberrypi.com/documentation/accessories/m2-hat-plus.html#boot-from-nvme

I'll be seeing it you can boot from a RAID drive but even if you can't right now I bet the ability to do so will be here shortly (in a user-friendly way).

And my post about setting up a RAID drive for a Pi-based NAS is https://social.sgawolf.com/@simon/112371761837279872

UK folks:

  • Publisher states a payment has been made + sent remittance.
  • I have not received the funds (after six weeks now) and my (UK) bank’s customer services, fraud and international teams have all stated they cannot see any payment and that I do not have a block on my account.

Any advice on what to do? I’ve never been in this situation before, and the amount of money is not insignificant. But also, the publisher appears to be very much in “we’ve paid so nothing we can do” mode now.

@craiggrannell I’m a litigious old sod so I’d be filing papers in the Small Claims Court.

We had to do it with Worldpay recently (they owed us a refund on fees) and got paid within 24 hours of them receiving the claim.

After the stigma about your age when it comes to recruiting, I think that the second-worst thing about being a middle-aged software developer are the mini-mid-life crises.

Today’s example was working on a long-form document in Word and then deciding (not for the first time) that learning LaTeX would be a wonderful thing to do.

Fortunately I still have the books I bought the last time this happened which will save me some money.

I hope this sells well. I won’t buy it, I didn’t get very far into S2 of Ted Lasso, but I’d like physical releases of other AppleTV+ films and show. Such as CODA and Severance.

@ianRobinson I’m tempted to buy it if only in the hope it leads to Slow Horses on Blu-ray too.

Is iCloud Drive playing silly buggers?

simon,

@ianRobinson A lot of people (myself included) needed to unlock their Apple accounts and reset passwords last night so it probably is.

I’ve just (finally!) deleted the company Twitter/X account. I’d been meaning to do it for a while but seeing an announcement by one of our customers that they were closing theirs due to the toxicity there was just the nudge I needed.

I finally have no reason (or temptation) to look at the nonsense there ever again.

Roll on season 2 (hopefully).

@bazcurtis I struggled with 4 at times because I found it the least engaging of the series. I loved 3 and 1 and 2 have a special place in my heart too because I played them at launch.

simon,
@simon@social.sgawolf.com avatar

@bazcurtis They’re also very long and can be a bit tedious at times so I can see boredom setting in too.

simon,
@simon@social.sgawolf.com avatar

@bazcurtis I’ve just looked Starfield up and it’s not what I thought it was (some sort of PvP space shooter thing). It looks good and I may give it a go myself.

simon,
@simon@social.sgawolf.com avatar

@ianRobinson I hope you enjoy the ending.

simon,
@simon@social.sgawolf.com avatar

@ianRobinson Yeah, I really hope we get a second season.

I think that if you know the games then some bits have more impact (Shady Sands is generally the first place you visit in the first game) so I’m pleased it also worked as a series for people who don’t know the games.

The trade-off to the convenience of a courier allocating you an hour’s delivery slot is that if they are running late, despite being 100 yards from your house, you get dropped from that day’s delivery run.

That’s the calm way of me expressing how frustrated I am that some hi-fi components are going to spend an unnecessary night in a delivery depot.

simon,
@simon@social.sgawolf.com avatar

@joshua But did you ever get the package?

    @hq1 I’ve started a second run of Bloodborne. My first was probably back in 2015 (it was my first Souls game and I played it a little while before Dark Souls III came out).

    It’s very good and I have an optimistic hope for a 10 year anniversary remastered version.

    And I’m pleased Dark Souls is getting better for you.

    simon,
    @simon@social.sgawolf.com avatar

    @hq1 I did indeed. And this run is a lot more fun and a lot less frustrating than the first time I did it.

    I’ve just finished watching Threads (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090163/) which is horrific. I’m very pleased I never saw it when I was younger. Having grown up in the 70s and 80s when nuclear war always felt like a very real threat possibly makes it worse but with Putin casually talking about it again these days it’s a chilling reminder of what the consequences might be.
