I think the debacle with Google's AI reading THe Onion is a symptom of a deeper problem.

I bet that some people who don't speak English that well, aren't familiar with English-language online culture, don't recognize the Onion brand, or who have a low cognitive ability, could fall for the same trick and make the same mistake.

This is why I was never a big fan of the Onion, it is too easy to misinterpret and take it at face value, especially in those situations. I think the problem here is with the Onion publishing misinformation online and all the people giving it good search engine rankings by linking to it, not Google's AI.

shane,

@miki Anyone producing "fiction", including movies, is thus publishing misinformation, according to your perspective. The deeper problem is a lack of educated people able to discern fact from fiction. #deeperproblem #factfromfiction

Yo, Nostr! Listen up. So many apps promise total control over my own data, my own connections. But then they ASK ME TO ENTER MY PRIVATE KEY. Do you not realize how stupid and counter-productive this is? I simply can’t login on iOS because almost all the Nostr clients want me to enter my private key. What’s the point then? So, I’m sticking with Mastodon and other AP apps since I can self host them and not give up my autonomy. #mastodongoodnostrsad #nostrnotyet #nostr #noonegetsmyprivatekey

@rolle @mustikkasoppa Thank you for setting your Mastodon server language to Finnish. It makes your posts translatable, using Libre Translate!! I find other languages on the Fediverse, but if their language isn't set, it just remains there, inaccessible for non-speakers/readers of that language. #libretranslate #accessibility

Sorry about the downtime❤️ I just did an emergency server upgrade since our main disk had little space left

Our database is getting quite large after 4 years so I gotta keep up with the hardware :cat_hug_triangle:

shane,

@stux Have you considered using an S3 backend for this? On my single-user self-hosted Mastodon instance, following 170 accounts, with a Live Feed on, I generate over 30GB a month, but it's all stored on my other self-hosted Minio instance, so the server Mastodon is running on never has to worry about not enough space.

shane,

@rmdes Good for you! I read your post... atrocious what the UUBT wants, and how they try to get it. Welcome here!

Hi Fediverse admins / devs! I've got a question about instance software.

Up until now, I've been running a fork of glitch-soc that has served me well. Unfortunately, however, I'm starting to run up against some of Mastodon's limitations and the effort to maintain my own fork is just too much. (seriously, fuck Rails and especially Webpacker :blobfoxangry:) I'd like to switch instance software to something with more features out-of-the-box. I'm considering Calckey, but I don't have any experience with it or any other Misskey derivative. The feature set looks great on paper but I'd like to hear from someone who has actually run it (or at least seriously evaluated the software). I'd greatly appreciate any and all input! I'm especially curious about these questions:

  1. Can I migrate my account from a Mastodon-based instance? Yes, this is supported.
  2. How are the moderation features? I make heavy use of domain suspensions and even the occasional IP ban. Moderation features don't quite match Mastodon, but are sufficient for good moderation.
  3. Both glitch-soc and Calckey support Markdown, but different variants. How does that work in practice? Does formatting break? Markdown is generally compatible, but calckey offers additional markdown.
  4. How's the security track record for Calckey / Misskey?
  5. Has anyone contributed or forked the codebase? Is it difficult to start a local dev environment? (not planning to fork, but I like to keep my options open.) The codebase has many individual contributors and forks.
  6. The "Fediverse Software Comparison" table has a few mistakes in the Mastodon and glitch-soc columns. They're minor, but it makes me wonder if that table is really trustworthy? The table is based on personal knowledge
  7. Are there any major compatibility issues with other instances? Minor differences are fine and unavoidable, but if there's a big limitation or something then I'd like to know about it. Federation works with any software that supports secure fetch.

Any other thoughts or feedback would also be wonderful. Thanks so much!

shane,

@hazel I've spun both CalcKey and MissKey up on Yunohost on a VPS, very quick and easy. If you want to check it out you can do so pretty quick.

SkyDeck has been launched; Tweetdeck for BlueSky.

The public and press are already enchanted with Bluesky. They know how to build a brand, they have big resources, the tech is advancing rapidly, and users are thrilled. If the Fediverse doesn't have a response to it, besides just building "bridges," it's in danger of going Betamax. And that would be bad.

shane,

@shoq I get your point, but this makes it seem like those "pioneers" were in the right and the arrows are unjust. Think of a better analogy that doesn't demonize first nations! #firstnations #casualracism #dobetter #beatthesystem

shane,

@shoq What other culture anywhere at any time had "pioneers" forging their way into a land where arrows are used. Maybe Australiasia, the Amazon? The inclusion of arrows is a clear reference to the Plains nations, at least from the stereotypical Hollywood depiction. And this is the layered racism inherent in this phrasing - even as I try to educate ppl about this, they claim they "didn't even know it meant natives" - so not only are we slandered, but we are also rendered invisible. Incredible.

Do you know what Elgg is?

shane,

@ben You bet! I've used it in the past alot. Wish I had reason to now.

So now the next question: why #Calckey?

Calckey is not the only kind of Fediverse server software I operate, and it won't be the last.

Currently, I also run a Pleroma server (atomicpoet.org) and a Pixelfed server (peerverse.space).

And when #SpaceHost gets off the ground, I plan on running Lemmy, Friendica, Castopod, and Mastodon servers.

However, I know exactly where the wind is blowing, and that's with *key apps.

#Misskey is already taking Japan by storm. And #Calckey is gaining popularity here in the West.

I've also heard that a few more *key apps are in development: one for organizations, the other one specialized for the African-American community.

Here's what I've realized.

For the Fediverse to truly take off, there needs to be more than just Mastodon. There needs to be something else that shows what else is possible on the Fediverse, and it looks like that realization of possibilities will be from the *key apps.

If you asked me a year ago what I thought would take off next from the Fediverse, I would have said it will be Pixelfed or PeerTube. That might still be possible, but based on trends since February, it's more likely to be the *key apps.

This is ultimately a good thing. For one thing, the popularity of *key apps will finally mean that Mastodon will not longer be synonymous with the Fediverse to the general public.

But this also benefits Mastodon because this means that one of the best features of Mastodon will finally be demonstrated: interoperability with other apps.

Once people see Mastodon talking with *key -- and vice versa -- they will finally appreciate the true promise of the Fediverse.

shane,

@atomicpoet well, i need to go spin up my own *key server then!
