I'm better known for science fiction, but my first published stories were fantasy (& slipstream).

This summer I'm releasing my first full-length fantasy novel & podcast (urban fantasy grounded in science, too).

To get folks ready-for a bit of a change-I'm re-launching some of my fantasy stories for patrons and in my newsletter (free & for members with perks, like on patreon).

You can subscribe & read Part 1 of 'Mountain Challenge' here. Audio episode coming soon!

Well...after a week and a half, I still haven't gotten anyone at Patreon.com to answer my emails, and I still can't post new podcasts there.

i may lose all the time and community and financial backers I've built on a third party platform...again.

Don't hand over control of your relationships to a third party, EVER. No matter how lucrative it seems.

Cory Doctorow and his
Pluralistic.net could put many SF authors out of business by drawing people from fiction back into contextual understanding of the real world, with good writing to tickle the same itches of many a reader while informing them bigly:

"Before neoliberalism can destroy our lives, it must first convince us that we are all disconnected...dismantling the democratically accountable structures that can stand against industrial tyrants."

A DOUBLE shot today, to kick off 'Farlost: 'Fog of War'!

How have refugees, miners and regular folk in the Winter asteroid belt kept the System Guard, a military goliath constantly waging cold or hot war, from invading?

📢 Meta Thinks Your Privacy Is for Sale.

But can Meta actually charge you for respecting your human right to privacy? 😎

Let's find out! 👇
https://tutanota.com/blog/meta-pay-for-privacy-illegal

servingworlds,
@servingworlds@vyrse.social avatar

@Tutanota

"Fundamental rights cannot be for sale. Are we going to pay for the right to vote or the right to free speech next? This would mean that only the rich can enjoy these rights, at a time when many people are struggling to make ends meet. Introducing this idea in the area of your right to data protection is a major shift. We would fight this up and down the courts."

Google is killing jam board in 2024. Never used it myself but I suspect about a million schools are gonna be pissed about this. But would they be google at all if they didn’t randomly release half baked web apps, never update them then kill them for no reason after 3 years?

(just add jam board to classrooms ya idiots)

servingworlds,
@servingworlds@vyrse.social avatar

@futurebird this is why open source needs government regs INCLUDING THEM as options in every public service.

Sure, FOSS pisses us off for being half baked but its never gonna disappear...and some of them eventually get fully baked :)

This pretty much explains the Fediverse

Share this post and if you can, post a comment because, genuinely I woke up this morning to a staggering number of shares and favourites.

The comments PROVE Mastodon is the place where common decency is being restored. I feel hopeful for the future.

What lovely people you all are.

Comment to be part of this new town square, or as I like to think of it, our tearoom. And add me, I'm going to be brewing lots of tea.

servingworlds,
@servingworlds@vyrse.social avatar

@cloudguy but it really doesn't come close to explaining the corporate world (and their reporters and fanciers) demand that everything be monetized to be a good public square.

Opposite much?

“We rebuilt the Mastodon backend from scratch and made it able to handle Twitter-scale (500M users, 20M writes/second, unbalanced social graph, etc.)”

Congratulations, you reinvented Big Tech.

Did you stop to consider that fediverse (emphasis “diverse”) servers should not be trying to reach “Twitter scale?” That they should be kept small on purpose? That the goal isn’t to recreate Twitter but with some other asshole in charge?

(Of course, it’s a VC-backed startup.)

The internet was built to be distributed.

Fediverse was built to be distributed.

Sadly, biz and egos don't want to be distributed.

Idea: A "Switch from Gmail day". An annual day that is dedicated to moving your email from being Google-owned to another, better, email provider.

It could have branding, and documentation on how to switch, and during that day people would go out of their way to really be helpful in guiding people to switch.

Switching away from Gmail seems like a tough thing for people, so I'd really love to normalize it. This is an important part of taking the internet back from big tech. Since moving email providers falls under "someday/maybe" list for many people, I think seeing other people might make the plunge would encourage others to do so, too.

What do you think?

servingworlds,
@servingworlds@vyrse.social avatar

I love the idea of a 'Leave Gmail Day'! Or should it be 'Leave Google Day'?
