I've updated my Microsoft Edge notes after working with it for a couple of weeks. If you use Office 365 for work like I do, here's a tip: Maximize (but don't go full screen!) when working with Edge. Read more in the full article linked above.
For Emacs org-mode users, two tips in two new notes: linking to other org-mode headers and plain lists to checklists in org-mode.
I'm reading Naomi Fisher's book "Changing Our Minds: How Children Can Take Control of Their Own Learning." The discussions of adult self-directed learning and also Peter Gray's theory about (play + curiosity) * sociability = learning reminds me of how much I like the #Emacs community.
@ctietze it's actually mostly geared towards parents considering homeschooling or unschooling, but I think it's useful even for supporting kids who are in more traditional school. Our kid is in virtual school, so we have a lot of flexibility in supporting her interests. For example, I found it useful to learn that mastery learning (focusing and persisting, learning more effectively, managing emotions better, becoming less distractible) generally develops around age 9, so I don't need to worry too much about our 8-year-old learning in short bursts and exploring different interests.
Looking for recos for Linux screencasting software for uploading to YT. This might be one of the last things I'll actually need Windows for. I currently use ScreenPal (formerly Screencastomatic). It's simple enough for me, but they don't have a linux version.
And I know OBS is awesome and everything, but I like simple a lot better than awesome.
Whoa. I feel like I've just arrived. My blog post on my #emacs learning in public adventures (https://bob-irving.com/117-2/) was reposted by @sachac ! I've been following her weekly emacs updates and found myself there. Like I said, whoa!
It's nice to be part of a pretty technical community that supports stumbling bumbling n00bs like me.
I was trying to use alphapapa's 'Listen' package, which was already installed, for audio transcription, but I struggled to find an intuitive way to skip forward or backward w/o leaving the working buffer. Also challenging was the fact that my keyboard only has a play/pause key.
But since 'listen' seemed to default to #VLC, I decided to use playerctl to control it, regardless of how it was launched. It's a command-line tool that works with MEPRIS players, and I could bind custom shortcuts in GNOME Shell to the play/pause key + a modifier.
Starting to learn 2x2 blindfolded following J Perm's tutorial. Day 2: I'm slowly getting the hang of moving pieces and moving them back during a sighted solve and I can sometimes close my eyes for one or two pieces in a row. Let's see if I can get the hang of it and if I can keep my brain on-task that long... #cubing
@ramin_hal9001 For algs, I haven't found anything better than just doing the alg slowly and then speeding up as they enter muscle memory. For pattern recognition, the tutorials tell you what colours to look for (ex: look for two corners of the same colour on one of the sides, put them in the back, then do this alg).
