Big news: Kitsune Tail's Steam Next Fest demo is live now! Go get it at https://store.steampowered.com/app/1325260 and experience the first part of this queer furry love triangle wrapped in an SMB3 jacket

You should definitely check the options. There's a CRT shader in Kitsune Tails made by @JoshJers which isn't on by default (because people get upset by that kinda thing) but playing with it on is totally the recommended experience

And for those of you who have Steam Decks, we've verified it works on that, too! And there's a new reveal trailer, showing off some of the bosses: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MRBcm5fagUU

Quick video of where my Berzerk-alike is at now. Be warned: Terrible placeholder audio might be loud, so maybe turn down the volume!

I know there's a dodgy wall collision in this vid, but tidy ups like that'll get sorted later.

I like the slow pace of it, which I didn't expect. It's very slow but it's still fun to play and quite exciting when you get caught up in it. I may end up making a separate, flashier, faster version eventually tho.. we'll see!

Well, thank f**k for that. UE 5.4.2 finally fixes String Table support which has been completely broken (pre-localisation builds) since 5.4.0. SUDS works again!

Please Epic, never do this to me again. I'm of an age that my heart attack risk is only increasing, so I'd appreciate not having the extra shove 😬

psychicparrot42,
@psychicparrot42@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@sinbad I've been doing some C++ with Unreal recently - very basic stuff, as it's all new to me - and I've been quite put off by it tbh. The thing I don't like is how 'tied in' it is to the engine code vs. Blueprints. Like, I wanted to update a C++ Unreal project from 5.1 to 5.3 and it decided I could no longer compile and I now had to compile 'from source'. Seems like updating versions can be trickier with C++, whereas Blueprints just work? I like it, but I don't feel safe with it any more lol

psychicparrot42,
@psychicparrot42@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@sinbad Thanks for the tip. I haven't tried Rider yet.. just been using VS since it was already on the machine and I'm used to it. I'll have a look into Rider.

psychicparrot42, (edited )
@psychicparrot42@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@sinbad Yeah much as I love Blueprints, for more complicated things I do prefer writing code.. which is why I wanted to shift over to C++, but it's been a bit flaky so far! (Maybe Rider will sort this?)

psychicparrot42,
@psychicparrot42@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@klord @sinbad Yeah that's a good point. I am finding it strange / going against my instincts, having to close and re-open the editor so much! It feels kinda rough compared to just having the editor open in one window with VS in the other, like.

psychicparrot42, (edited )
@psychicparrot42@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@sinbad Ouch! Just seen the price of Rider... yeahhh I don't think I can go for that tbh! Thanks for the suggestion, though. The fact that it's a yearly subscription puts me off, but a yearly subscription starting at $200+ CAD is too much for me. Maybe if I start getting freelance Unreal gigs (in the future), I'll look at it again. It'll just have to be VS for me for now!

@psychicparrot42@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@sinbad I am glad they fixed this, I know it's been a stress for you. Stress no more! 👍

Random game thought: I’ve been thinking about a game controller with three joysticks, but I can’t come up with a good enough reason to have the extra one. Two joysticks seems to cover everything, right? Have we reached peak game controller? What could we map to a third stick? The closest to a good reason I could think of would be radial menus, but you can easily do those with a modifier and one of the other sticks right? #gamedev

psychicparrot42,
@psychicparrot42@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@grumpygamer Hmm. Maybe because we want less and less tutorials and learning time in games now, there’s more of a tendency to lean on just mapping everything to numerous buttons rather than modifiers or on screen systems? The more I think about this, the less I believe it though, because some on screen solutions can be easier than remembering all the buttons etc. 🤔

psychicparrot42,
@psychicparrot42@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@toerror @bazkie Ahhh yeah I forgot about flight sticks having more axis. For flying stuff the extra axis makes sense, I think.

psychicparrot42,
@psychicparrot42@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@sinbad @toerror @bazkie Aww that's cool! I like that you can easily switch between them. I doubt adding an extra joystick to a game controller would come close to the kind of experience a proper flight stick gives!

OK this has got to be one of the weirdest images on Amazon. It's an image for Croc toes. You get a rubber toe for $12 and put it on your Crocs, so it looks like your toe is sticking out. Just wait until that poor kid opens the box and sees it's full of toes (or maybe just one toe in a lot of wrapping?). In my head, this whole thing is a scene from a horror movie. #AmazonFinds

Whenever I kick off a new game project, the first thing I do is play every other game like it until I lose all enthusiasm (because I know I'll never be able to compete with them as a no budget indie dev!) .. I then go make something else instead. 🤪

.. I'm kidding. Don't do this! Keep the faith. Make the thing. You got this! 🤣

I keep an Xbox dev kit on my desk, even though I'm not currently working on an Xbox game. I should probably put it away in a cupboard until I am working on an Xbox game again, but it looks cool and reminds me that I (me! little me in my house with no money and all self taught) can make games for consoles! And that's actually pretty darn awesome, I reckon. So, it's like a little ego boost.. is that vain? 🤔

Bobbins, to random
@Bobbins@bobbinsrobots.com avatar

Seeing talk of controller complexity reminds me that there's people out there who don't continually press the wrong button out of the two weirdly labelled ones to get to the map/inventory/quest log/options feature they need.

What must that be like?

psychicparrot42,
@psychicparrot42@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@Bobbins I spend far too much time swearing at the controllers. Usually when I return to the game after a few days and have absolutely no idea how to control anything anymore and the controls aren’t listed anywhere outside of the tutorials I’ve completely forgotten.
