Wheeeeeeee! Bouncy bouncy letters and trippy tunnel of level transition! #IndieDev #JackDragon

A GIF of my game, Jack Dragon. A 'ready' message with bouncy bright letters appears, then a blue dragon moves around the screen collecting gems. Once all the gems are gone, another bouncy colourful letter message reads 'goal' and the screen is taken over by a psychedelic tunnel that transitions into the next level.

Browsing through backups of my own projects (not freelance!) I have a lot of games that I've started making, spent several weeks or months on and not finished. I mean, I do finish at least one game a year, so that's something, but I think the ratio of unfinished to finished is probs about 4:1. feel like this isn't the best use of my time as a 'making money' person but is probably the best use of my time as a 'making games' person. It's all learning and I may go back to some of these one day..

I wonder what's the most technically influential videogame of all time? I mean, a game that if you removed it from history then hundreds of other games over many different genres would suffer without the systems it introduced etc. You know, like an rpg that brought games a health 'number' rather than just 3 lives, or a game that pioneered the use of two joysticks etc.?

With the WRC dropping hybrid cars in favour of synthetic fuels, of course all the dickheads are out to hark on about the ‘good old days’ of rally when drivers were real drivers(!) and rally cars were real cars that used proper fossil fuels. They dig out all kinds of stats warped to show how any attempt at environmentalism is somehow worse than burning fossil fuels and nod along with each other about it. No time for em. Bunch of ‘car guy’ fascists.

Today is the day I was going to move my motherboard into its new case, but I’m also upgrading the CPU cooler and that’s kinda scary.. I have all the right kit for it like paste, paste cleaner and anti-static wrist thingy and all that.. but it’s still a scary job when you know that if you screw it up your livelihood is ruined 🫣 (and you won’t be able to afford to put it right if you eff up the CPU!) .. I just need to crack on and get it done buuut.. yknow

I wonder if there are any games from the 80s that, if they were released for the first time today, would still be hailed as genius game design (we’d be seeing them for the first time, but not we may already know the genre). And what does it mean if that’s not the case? Has how we perceive games changed so much that our very idea of ‘the core of a good game’ has changed to something more superficial?

What am I working on? Well, it's still pretty early days (and I've been project hopping a lot this year) but I've been messing with a PC port of my ZX Spectrum game Jack Dragon .. bit wary of showing this because of my dodgy pixel art skills, but hey there it is I need to put this stuff out there, right? 🤪 #IndieDev #JackDragon

Whenever I kick off a new game project, the first thing I do is play every other game like it until I lose all enthusiasm (because I know I'll never be able to compete with them as a no budget indie dev!) .. I then go make something else instead. 🤪

Improved the timing on my level transitions.. now you can see the start of it better, as it covers the screen like you're going into a tunnel rather than the effect appearing almost all at once as it was before.. I think the little timing tweaks make a big difference to how it feels! #JackDragon #IndieDev

It's a GIF! In my (pixelly platformer) game, the level is completed at the start of this video and a transition happens where the screen becomes filled with stars as if you're going through some kind of star tunnel. It opens up at the end to reveal the next level.

Added a little frost effect to the screen edges when you pick up the ice powerup.. may animate it a bit later, but I've got the rest of the game to make first, so overtly fancy stuff like that will have to wait! #JackDragon #IndieGame

Just got a trackball mouse to try out for a bit, instead of my usual ergonomic 'handshake' position mouse. Hoping my thumb doesn't start hurting from all the thumb movement I have to do now! Also, hoping I get better at pointing at stuff because I'm finding it hard to actually click stuff atm. sure that'll come with practice tho

OK this has got to be one of the weirdest images on Amazon. It's an image for Croc toes. You get a rubber toe for $12 and put it on your Crocs, so it looks like your toe is sticking out. Just wait until that poor kid opens the box and sees it's full of toes (or maybe just one toe in a lot of wrapping?). In my head, this whole thing is a scene from a horror movie. #AmazonFinds

I was dunking, right, and I just dropped a whole digestive into my cup of tea. The whole thing! Thought it was done for, but I was able to reach in quickly and the whole biscuit came back out. Still intact! 1. Digestives are good, solid reliable biscuits for dunking aren't they?? 2. I think this means it's my lucky day!

I keep an Xbox dev kit on my desk, even though I'm not currently working on an Xbox game. I should probably put it away in a cupboard until I am working on an Xbox game again, but it looks cool and reminds me that I (me! little me in my house with no money and all self taught) can make games for consoles! And that's actually pretty darn awesome, I reckon. So, it's like a little ego boost.. is that vain? 🤔

I still find it amazing that I can even own a 10 TERRABYTE hard drive. It's just silly numbers my tiny human mind cannot comprehend. Still feels sort of science fiction to me to be able to have all that data on something less than room size!

OK, so this one effect/level transition for my game took me the whole afternoon to make but I think you have to agree it was worth it. It's a lovely, seamless way to load the next level AND get all psychedelic about it. Yay! #IndieDev #IndieGames
