I’m probably in the 3-4 edits range. I obsess about grammar and spelling, but also the tone. If the tone isn’t right first time it can take me a few goes to get it right.
For me, the corrective obsession could also be an age thing, right? I grew up in a time when we sent letters to each other, on actual paper, starting with ‘Dear sir/madam’ and ending with ‘Yours faithfully’ lol - it had to be formatted specifically too.
Dear Sir/Madam,
Please may I order one of your hats? I have enclosed a postal order for the correct amount.
Yours faithfully,
Eric VonHatwearer BSC.
I've had web hosting for 20+ years and given how much cheaper all the components in the service have gotten in that time (CPU cycles, bandwidth, storage), by rights we should by now all have our own hosting for federated services for pennies or bundled with our internet service. Why is it still so expensive? I used to run databases on a potato compared to now
I wonder what's the most technically influential videogame of all time? I mean, a game that if you removed it from history then hundreds of other games over many different genres would suffer without the systems it introduced etc. You know, like an rpg that brought games a health 'number' rather than just 3 lives, or a game that pioneered the use of two joysticks etc.?
BTW: I don't have any good answers to this, but if someone could just give me academic tenure or a big wedge of cash to research this stuff, I'm sure I could ... 🤣 🤪
@Praxismapper Yeah I don't know if there was anything between the old style of 3d maze game and then free movement in doom or not.. I can't think of anything, anyway. I think that was a huge step. We'd had FPS before, in mazes, but not free roam like that as far as I know.
@patrickmcurry@Praxismapper Hovertank 3D .. Battlezone meets 3d Monster Maze?! 🤔 Interesting you mention the advancement of tech because the two go hand in hand for some major steps forward in games, right? It almost becomes the first to utilize the tech as much as the first to come up with something innovative.. although utilizing the tech IS innovative, so I don't want to belittle it, but you know what I mean?
.. also there’s no way of telling which games influenced which other games, of course, it’s all speculation unless the creator explicitly said “I made this because of this” like. We lose so much game history over time .. there can never be enough books, interviews or articles about them in my opinion!
@patrickmcurry@Praxismapper Ah I missed out on Atari computers so that whole world is new to me. I had Sinclair and BBC at home, then an Amiga until PCs became a thing. Sadly didn’t get to experience much of the Atari machines other than the 2600. Just looked up Wayout and oh wow! That’s stunning for 1982! 😵💫
@sinbad You do now! 😀 .. 'The Edge' hides in the shadows, lurking beneath your desktop, ready to strike when you least expect it.. to open a pdf file or a random link or something. 🦸♂️
@glassbottommeg Look out for my upcoming GCD talk "How I got 100,000 wishlists for my indie game simply by harnessing the power of the ghost racoon who lives under my desk'.
