Angry subtweet: as someone whose family escaped poverty, it really irritates me when people play poor as a fashion act, ESPECIALLY when your act is to say things that imply that “poor” is the same as “stupid”. EVERY poor single mom knows how to hustle for money, and the vast majority understand how banking (and compound interest) work. It’s not that poor people don’t have savings account because they’re ignorant of their existence, they don’t have them because they just don’t have the money. The money gets spent to live.

If by some chance you’re not play-acting with your “The rich people were hiding savings accounts from us” schtick, the simplest answer is that you weren’t paying attention for the month or so in 5th grade when your public school (like mine) covered financial literacy issues like interest, writing a check, and so on.

And if you are play-acting, which is what I suspect: shame on you. Go jump in a lake, and then find a less insulting act.
