Review for Pen Pen on Dreamcast from Dreamcast Magazine 2 - October 1999 (UK) score: 86%

nafnlj,

@OutofPrintArchive I played too much Pen Pen Triicelon back in the day. I got a Dreamcast close to launch but for whatever reason (probably sold out) did not get Sonic Adventure until a few weeks later. Thus, Pen Pen was initially my only DC game. Pretty fun and the graphics looked amazing compared to N64.

There are LOADS fo alternatives to Goodreads!

Here's my growing list of alternative book & reading tracking services. Each one does things slightly differently, so you're likely to find one that works just right for you. 💜

@libreture Suggestion: Add Open Library. Open source and has very similar personal reading tracking (including challenges) to Goodreads.

nafnlj,

@OutofPrintArchive Very nostalgic. I agree with the magazine take on the camera of death. Interesting to see they praised the Knuckles levels over Sonic's... I think the high-speed Sonic levels were much more fun than the Knuckles treasure hunts.

I wonder if users will see this post...
🤔

nafnlj,

@gabriel @wjmaggos I'm able to follow my Minds account and follow this account from Minds, but no posts have appeared after 2 months or so, so I'm not quite sure how it's supposed to work. Could be missing something though -- I didn't study it beyond following myself.

Fresh off the presses, my long, detailed history of a former official New York City holiday that landed on November 25: Evacuation Day. It commemorated the evacuation, or final departure, of the British military from Manhattan on November 25, 1783, which was followed by the entry of the U.S. military led by a certain General George Washington.

I installed ActivityPub for WordPress on The New Leaf Journal. You can now follow the site at @newleafjournal to stay up to date with our latest posts from Mastodon or other ActivityPub clients (I have only looked at the on Mastodon). Note that you will only see new posts that appear after you follow.

Brilliant list.
The only one that took me aback was his Fire Emblem choice since I adore Three Houses.
Haven’t played Engage yet so I can’t really compare them.
But I’m hoping that the next game goes back to the Three Houses formula as that really hooked me.

nafnlj,

@OutofPrintArchive I agree with his praise of Engage generally. The combat and maps are better than Three Houses and it is technically (visuals, performance) superior. But having played Three Houses multiple times and being almost done with my first Engage run -- I agree that I would like to see a return to the Three Houses "formula." The better writing, story, and characters in Three Houses ultimately outweighs the better game-play and performance of Engage in my personal estimation.

nafnlj,

@OutofPrintArchive I'd welcome a sequel in the vein of Three Houses. Engage definitely focused on callbacks, but not in a way that made me -- with no FE experience before Awakening -- feel lost. Battles are nice and the old characters function like more interesting battalions from TH. Maddening is also better balanced in Engage than TH, which I would like to see carried over to a new one. I may fall in the "most people" on Warriors... doesn't look appealing to me, but maybe I should try.

@Mojeek I wrote a general PSA on whitelisting Mojeek, Seznam, and other independent search crawlers. It is always satisfying to see a Mojeek referral in my analytics logs and I am aware of a couple of cases where people found one of my articles with Marginalia Search.

Perpetual Ricing:

Hmmm, I think my next goal is to create a custom userChrome.css file for Firefox, to make it use space more efficiently. I just can't deal with the shitty UI anymore, tabs are massive, menus are massive.
The problem is, I am no developer so it's gonna take me a long time using other's code as example/starting point.

nafnlj,

@fatboy https://www.userchrome.org/firefox-89-styling-proton-ui.html#menuspacing

I used this to reduce vertical spacing in menus to 2px, I recommend it at least as a starting point. I used a different guide to get rid of the top bar so Tree Style Tabs handles all of my tabs -- another good fix if you like vertical tabs.

nafnlj, to DuckDuckGo

I drafted a new article about DuckDuckGo's reliance on Bing. Shortly after drafting, and before editing, I read that TechCrunch had been blacklisted/de-indexed by Bing. I suppose the timing was good for the article but it created more work for me. (Obligatory note that NLJ is de-indexed by Bing, and as a result, invisible to DuckDuckGo.)

https://thenewleafjournal.com/duckduckgo-in-the-bing-pond/

nafnlj,

@matt I wrote about my site's de-indexing and other de-indexing stories, links below if you're interested.

Repo: https://github.com/nafnlj/not-awesome-bing-bans-and-deindexing

My site's story: https://thenewleafjournal.com/the-story-of-our-bing-blacklisting/

I finally got an email from a real person at Bing in June after 6 months of trying. Supposedly they're "reviewing" it but I have had no updates since the start of the "review" on June 20 or 21. No idea what the issue is at this point. I'm in good standing with Google, Yandex, Mojeek, and Brave -- so it's only Bing.

nafnlj,

@matt Re; "I’d imagine that when Mr says things getting censored are “bugs” I’m going to presume that is meant to serve DDG uncensored results via the API, where the censoring would happen exclusively on Bing.com"

I think that's true with respect to the CCP-related censorship incidents, but I don't think it applies to situations like TechCrunch or smaller sites which get de-indexed. I do grant, however, that DDG is obviously limited in what it can do and say with respect to Bing.

nafnlj, to EndeavourOS

For whatever reason, my computer won't suspend or hibernate. I have generally assumed it has to do with using DisplayPort for my primary monitor and HDMI for my secondary... but never quite figured it out. It is not a big deal since I turn my computer off when I am not using it anyway. Instead of continuing to dig into the weeds... I decided to install Xscreensaver and enable almost all of the screensavers. Left my computer for about 20 minutes and returned to Pacman on my primary monitor and a dancing wireframe box on my secondary monitor. Highly recommended.

#endeavouros #xfce #xscreensaver #powermanagement #linux

nafnlj,

@Linux_in_a_Bit Not before, no. I tested the XFCE and Xscreensaver packages (running EndeavourOS) and went with the Xscreensaver one. Works without any issue regardless of the power settings.

nafnlj,

@Linux_in_a_Bit Thanks for the hint. I got it working my switching to the XFCE screensaver package and resetting my power saver configuration. Now it properly goes to screensaver and suspend works.

nafnlj, to microsoft

I received a sort of real response from Bing Webmaster support after sending my latest inquiry (we have to be close to 10 now). Automated, yes, but a support number and inviting me to respond to the thread if I have updates. This is good because I'm coming close to blocking Bingbot in robots.txt. Just know I'm doing all of this out of the goodness of my heart for the DuckDuckGo/Ecosia/Qwant crowd out there.

(Or so I tell myself.)
