I grew up in a culture where looking at your own suffering and saying “themʼs the breaks” makes you wise;

looking at someone elseʼs suffering and saying “tough shit” makes you smart and cool;

saying “living really shouldnʼt be this hard in a rich country” or “helping the poorest in our community improves the quality of our own lives” makes you naive and a bleeding heart.
