So I've listened to @LateNightLinux Christmas special episode, where the hosts were asked "how to make the internet better?". I fully agree with the views presented there. Decentralization, federation, selfhosting are the ways to make the internet better, go back to the pre-capitalist times before monopolies. One thing that I feel was not mentioned is finding a way to tackle CGNAT and other obstacles in self hosting. 1/x

mobiuscog,

@stfn @drizzy @LateNightLinux is DynamicDNS not an option ? Or maybe ngrok ?

mobiuscog,

@stfn @drizzy @LateNightLinux personally I would never self-host anything with public interaction, as bandwidth/DDoS is a real problem and it preventing hacks is more effort than I care to worry about.

I've done it many years ago in 'simpler' times, and even then it turns into a job very quickly.

I know that doesn't answer the question, but bypassing cgnat is just the initial hurdle - active maintenance and management is much more work.

mobiuscog,

@drizzy @stfn @LateNightLinux anything on the public internet is technically a target for DDoS and/or hacking. You may not be a big target, but many attacks are just random/tests to see what is 'easy'.

For mastodon, I don't know how the federation happens, but I presume other servers will need to query yours, and so how much data would be a question along with frequency.

One last check is whether your ISP allows services to be run.

mobiuscog,

@stfn @drizzy @LateNightLinux ddos is not about your server. It's about your network connection.

Personally, I don't think Wayland will take off until desktops other than GNOME or KDE are supported.

I specifically will not be forced to use GNOME because "that's the only way to run a desktop under Wayland." (KDE still has a bad rap with me because things in C++ were very slow in 1999)

Looks like I'll be using a KDE desktop with a bunch of X applications and GNOME applications. At least until lighter desktops support Wayland.

If Xorg isn't going to maintain X, it's done. Stick a fork in

mobiuscog,

@yakkoj I found wayland to be fine until I needed business apps like slack and zoom, and then suddenly all sorts of oddities sprang up.

Until it's a drop-in replacement as you mention, I'll stick with Xorg.

The FSL license implements a two-year commercial non-compete followed by an automatic switch to Apache-2.0 or MIT: https://fsl.software/

@mitsuhiko makes a case for the FSL illustrated by Bambu Labs coming up at Prusa: https://lucumr.pocoo.org/2023/12/25/life-and-death-of-open-source/ I'm not sure a two-year period would have made a significant difference in that instance, but the FSL is an interesting proposition, somewhere between OSI open-source and patents.

mobiuscog,

@locoscaron @mitsuhiko when does the two years begin ? After initial commit, after each change ? That seems really confusing.

mobiuscog,

@mitsuhiko @locoscaron I can't see any business risking the usage of that. It's a legal minefield.

mobiuscog,

@mitsuhiko @locoscaron interesting. For most compliance purposes, if it's not clear what the licence is, it's a no go. I guess you could just assume it's all under the commercial license, and ignore the open source aspect.

I couldn't see it being a license that would be allowed into where I work.

@apodoxus @Gina this seems a great idea for an answering assistant. It picks up and asks who it is, which it will inform the real user of, and if the real user declines, it will have a conversation with the caller, doing it's best to occupy them.

Am I the only person who rarely (if ever) has more than 5 tabs open ?

    mobiuscog, to ai

This is just the tip of the and anyone stating is not at risk, is blatantly lying.

Pandora's box is open, and unless governments actually care for the people (they don't - they care about wealth and power more) there is no happy ending.

Powerful companies are now in control, with laws unable or unwilling to take back the rights that should exist.

This was all predictable and yet it continues.

Like calling people Software Engineers instead of Programmers, or people using the word bespoke instead of custom, I think asking people to stop calling what they make “content” is probably a losing battle at this point. Still, as @clive implores us, we should try.

    https://medium.com/@clivethompson/lets-stop-calling-it-content-8410bf5f94a9

    mobiuscog,

@jaycruz @clive I can't read all of that 'content' as it requires an account.

I think the reason it exists now is that many modern 'content creators' are effectively marketing, presenting the creations of others with some added 'flair' but they don't want to admit that it's marketing, so it's 'content'.

I'm a Software Engineer, but content to be called a programmer.

@wimpy interesting. I have a number of Apple devices, but if my Garmin Fenix failed, I'd immediately buy another.

's claims for their new solid state-battery technology are stunning. 1,200 km range (~745 miles) on a full charge. Lighter and less expensive than lithium-ion batteries. And the icing on the cake? 10 minutes or less to fully charge.

Vehicles with these should start in 2027. If this holds up, EVs will start being more convenient than traditional engines and could be in serious trouble.

    https://www.topspeed.com/everything-to-know-toyota-solid-state-battery/#decoding-toyota-39-s-potentially-game-changing-solid-state-battery-breakthrough

    mobiuscog,

@AWStephen @ovid hybrids are essential for the millions who are unable to charge 'at home'.

Sure, EVs should be the eventual goal (ideally mostly as public transport in cities) but there's already a huge wealth privilege required.

    mobiuscog,

@ovid @AWStephen I just wish public transport would have more priority/focus so the overall number of cars could decrease.

I love what they have in Singapore, though appreciate that's a small island.

    cwensel, to opensource

is there a way to prevent a public repo from being indexed by an AI tool like copilot or other tools?

    mobiuscog,

@cwensel @simon I think everyone would, and there are some specifications/proposals.

However, how well you can trust those training AI and/or audit that, I really don't know.

I would not assume anything publicly visible will be crawled by some, no matter what you do. The onus would be on you to prove it.

The chancellor talking about how great the UK is, especially leading the way in Vaccines.

Tell me, where can I get - even paying for - a covid booster ? Oh, that's right, I can't.

Making the UK the new Silicon Valley is great - for wealthy investors. For the average person, it means being locked into more 'tech' required subscriptions and paying more for services (to keep investors happy), but nobody to do the work that society actually depends on.

Just rolled the credits on after a very enjoyable 104 hours, and then straight back in to NG+ (I did all of the main/faction quests, and some side/exploration but there's a lot I left).

I know some people weren't happy that the game didn't match their expectations, but personally I think made a wonderful game that has a lot of replayability and will become even better as more mods appear.

If an open source project says "we don't support building from source", are they really an open source project?

    mobiuscog,

@lhinderberger @whynothugo in some companies (and even OSS projects) the 'open' source is just automatically copied from another environment that has additional build tools.

Even if it's the same codebase, there may be non-open build requirements that aren't publicly available.

It's simply about providing the source, and nothing more.

Some things that don’t require SaaS/Cloud/Servers…

    • chat/social media
    • cms
    • crm
    • video/audio/image editing
    • productivity like spreadsheets and docs
    • games

    Hmm, what else…

    mobiuscog,

@heapwolf how does discovery work for social media if there are no servers ?

    mobiuscog,

@heapwolf that doesn't answer my question, and developers absolutely need to understand how their client discovers others and/or what the gateways or super-peers are.

Even clusters require some sort of discovery mechanism.
