This lycosoides coarctata is only 0,3 inches long, but its enlarged image makes it look much more impressive.

A bumblebee (bombus terrestris) on a Polygala myrtifolia flower in February. This plant native to South Africa blooms almost all year round in this park in Valencia and attracts all kinds of insects.

Un abejorro (bombus terrestris) sobre una flor de Polygala myrtifolia en febrero. Esta planta originaria de Sudáfrica florece casi todo el año en este parque de Valencia y atrae a todo tipo de insectos.

Eine Erdhummel (bombus terrestris) auf einer Polygala myrtifolia Blüte im Februar. Diese aus Südafrika stammende Pflanze blüht in diesem Park in Valencia fast das ganze Jahr über und ist attraktiv für alle Arten von Insekten.

Una mantis sujeta con sus garras a un saltamontes mientras lo devora.
En una foto se ve una lesión en el ojo izquierdo que puede haberle hecho una de sus presas al defenderse… Estas lesiones parecen habituales.

Eine Gottesanbeterin hält einen Grashüpfer mit ihren Fangbeinen fest, während sie ihn verschlingt.
Auf einem Foto ist eine Verletzung am linken Auge zu sehen, die möglicherweise von einem ihrer Beutetiere zugefügt wurde, als sie sich verteidigte. Solche Verletzungen scheinen häufig zu sein.

Like dragonflies, some butterflies (charaxes jasius, iphiclides podalirius, iphiclides feisthamelii) always perch in the same place. When they return to the branch or leaf from which they have just taken off, they do not scare if you wait without moving. Many butterflies fly making a loop to guide themselves, sometimes in the shape of a figure eight, which reminds me of the loop we make with our smartphone to calibrate the compass.

Como suelen hacer las libélulas, algunas mariposas vuelven a posarse siempre en el mismo sitio. Al volver a la rama u hoja de donde acaban de despegar no se asustan si esperas sin moverte.

Wie die Libellen kehren auch einige Schmetterlinge immer an dieselbe Stelle zurück. Wenn sie zu dem Zweig oder Blatt zurückkehren, von dem sie gerade abgeflogen sind, schrecken sie nicht, wenn man wartet, ohne sich zu bewegen.

An iphiclides podalirius butterfly or podalirius perched on a leaf. It is one of the largest in Europe.

It may seem silly, but I've gotten used to using this homemade gadget to hold my smartphone with one hand. When I take pictures of insects I usually need my other hand free for support, holding on to something or moving branches or leaves out of the way. There are more sophisticated solutions but I can't carry them in my small pant pocket.

Can I filter the photos with the terms macro and mastodon?

Using keywords to organize and search for photos and trying to edit them in both macOS and iOS has been a nightmare. I was trying to have a system that I could use on both operating systems.

I finally decided to use only titles and captions (descriptions) as metadata.
Captions can be words like: macro, lens, insect, bee, park, Spain, mastodon, uploaded, etc…

The iOS Photos app allows you to add captions to individual photos but MetaGear is the app I've tried that most easily does this in batches.

On the other hand, HashPhotos allows you to add titles to batches of photos and works with the same photo gallery that iOS uses.

Titles and captions can be edited and searched both on iPhone and iPad as well as by the Photos app or the Mac's Finder / Spotlight

In this way I can search for pictures by descriptive words, create albums, folders and organize photos.

The largest butterfly in Europe.
The adults of the strawberry tree butterfly, Charaxes jasius, usually feed on the juices of ripe fruits. Maybe that's why it has landed on a branch of the fig tree in my garden (Photo taken in September, Alicante province).

Los adultos de la mariposa del madroño, Charaxes jasius se alimentan generalmente de los jugos de frutas maduras. Tal vez por eso se ha posado en una rama de la higuera de mi jardín.

Die erwachsenen Tiere des Erdbeerbaumfalters, Charaxes jasius, ernähren sich normalerweise von den Säften reifer Früchte. Vielleicht ist er deshalb auf einem Zweig des Feigenbaums in meinem Garten gelandet.

Three tips that work for me: with a rubber band I attach a binocular lens over the main camera so I can focus from closer and get a shallower depth of field than with the macro mode; with another rubber band and a piece of strap I can safely hold the smartphone with one hand; and the sun reflecting on the white case helps me to compensate the backlight...

Me fascinan los ojos del grillo de matorral porque no parecen los de un insecto. Aunque no sea realmente así parece que tengan pupilas y cuenca ocular.

Mich faszinieren die Augen der Laubheuschrecke, weil sie nicht wie die eines Insekts aussehen. Sie sehen aus, als hätten sie Pupillen und eine Augenhöhle, obwohl sie das nicht haben.

Esta mantis posa para la fotografía sobre unas hojas de Lechera del Cabo (Polygala myrtifolia). En La foto no se puede ver, pero he contado ocho segmentos en el abdomen, lo que indicaría que es un ejemplar macho.

Diese Gottesanbeterin posiert für dieses Foto auf einigen Blättern der Kreuzblume Blüte (Polygala myrtifolia). Man kann es auf dem Foto nicht sehen, aber ich habe acht Segmente auf dem Hinterleib gezählt, was darauf hindeutet, dass es sich um ein Männchen handelt.

The Shield-backed bug (Solenosthedium bilunatum) camouflages itself in the almond trees, or in the freshly harvested almonds, and its coloration camouflages it perfectly with its environment. It does not seem to damage the crops. Photo taken at the end of September in the province of Alicante, Spain.

La Chinche del Almendro (Solenosthedium bilunatum) se camufla en los almendros, o en la almendra recién cosechada, y su coloración la mimetiza perfectamente con ese entorno. Al parecer no llega a dañar los cultivos.

Die Schildwanze (Solenosthedium bilunatum) tarnt sich in Mandelbäumen oder in frisch geernteten Mandeln, und ihre Färbung tarnt sie perfekt mit ihrer Umgebung. Er scheint die Pflanzen nicht zu schädigen.

The orange color on the antennae means that it is a male carpenter bee Xylocopa violacea. In Xilopa valga, which is very similar, the antennae are completely black. Photo taken in a park in Valencia-Spain.

El color naranja en las antenas indica que es un macho de abeja carpintera Xylocopa violacea. En la Xilopa valga, que es muy parecida, las antenas son completamente negras.

Die orange Farbe der Fühler ist ein Zeichen dafür, dass es sich um die männliche Holzbiene Xylocopa violacea handelt. Bei der sehr ähnlichen Xylocopa valga sind die Fühler komplett schwarz.

I took these two photos of a mantis in a park in Valencia, one with the macro function of the ultra wide-angle camera of the iPhone 15 Pro and the other by placing a binoculars lens over the main camera. I think I like the second one better because the shallower depth of field and bokeh effect make the mantis stand out.

Hice estas dos fotos de una mantis en un parque de Valencia, una con la función macro de la cámara ultra gran angular del iPhone 15 Pro y la otra superponiendo la lente de unos binoculares a la cámara principal. Creo que me gusta más la segunda porque la menor profundidad de campo y efecto bokeh hacen destacar a la mantis.

Ich habe diese beiden Fotos einer Gottesanbeterin in einem Park in Valencia aufgenommen, eines mit der Makrofunktion der ultra wide-angle Kamera des iPhone 15 Pro und und das andere, indem ich ein Fernglas über die Hauptkamera gesetzt habe. Ich glaube, das zweite gefällt mir besser, weil die geringere Schärfentiefe und der Bokeh-Effekt die Gottesanbeterin hervorheben.

This Sympetrum fonscolombii (?) dragonfly seems to pose for this photo on a barbed wire imitating one of its spikes.

Argiope trifasciata is easily mistaken for the wasp spider (Argiope bruennichi). It injects its victims with paralyzing venom and gastric juices that cause external digestion of its prey. I have photographed this one capturing an oxythirea funesta beetle which it wraps in a few seconds with the silk produced by its anal glands. (Calpe, Alicante, early October).

La Argiope trifasciata es fácilmente confundible con la araña tigre (Argiope bruennichi). Inyecta a sus víctimas un veneno paralizante y con jugos gástricos que provocan la digestión externa de sus presas. He fotografiado ésta capturando un escarabajo oxythirea funesta al que envuelve en pocos segundos con la seda que producen sus glándulas anales.

Argiope trifasciata ist leicht mit der Wespenspinne (Argiope bruennichi) zu verwechseln. Sie injiziert ihren Opfern ein lähmendes Gift und Magensäfte, die eine äußere Verdauung der Beute bewirken. Ich habe dieses Exemplar fotografiert, wie es einen Oxythirea funesta-Käfer fängt, den es in wenigen Sekunden mit der von seinen Analdrüsen produzierten Seide einwickelt.

I shot this photo of an adult scrub cricket (Phaneroptera falcata) on the flower of a Pontederia cordata. Only when I got home did I realize that next to it there was also a nymph of the same species with those very long antennae up to four times the body length.

Disparé esta foto de un grillo de matorral adulto (Phaneroptera falcata) sobre la flor de una Pontederia cordata. Sólo al llegar a casa me di cuenta de que a su lado también había una ninfa de la misma especie con esas larguísimas antenas de hasta hasta cuatro veces la longitud del cuerpo.

Ich habe dieses Bild von einer erwachsenen Laubheuschrecke (Phaneroptera falcata) auf der Blüte einer Pontederia cordata aufgenommen. Erst als ich nach Hause kam, bemerkte ich, dass daneben auch eine Nymphe derselben Art mit diesen sehr langen Fühlern, die bis zu viermal so lang wie der Körper sind, zu sehen war.

I am not an entomologist, but I think it is a Cylindroiulus caeruleocinctus, one of dozens and dozens of species of millipedes (diplopoda) that can be found in the Iberian Peninsula, many still undiscovered. They have an important role in soil fertilization, fragmenting leaf litter, and turning it into feces that they carry to deeper soil layers. Photo taken in my garden, Alicante province, in mid-September.

No soy entomólogo, pero creo que es un Cylindroiulus caeruleocinctus, una de los docenas y docenas de especies de milpiés (diplopoda) que se pueden encontrar en la península ibérica, muchas sin descubrir todavía. Tienen un importante papel en la fertilización del suelo, fragmentando la hojarasca, y convirtiéndola en heces que llevan a capas del suelo más profundas. Foto tomada en mi jardín, provincia de Alicante, a mediados de septiembre.

Ich bin kein Entomologe, aber ich glaube, es handelt sich um einen Cylindroiulus caeruleocinctus, eine von Dutzenden Arten von Tausendfüßern (Diplopoda), die auf der Iberischen Halbinsel vorkommen und von denen viele noch unentdeckt sind. Sie spielen eine wichtige Rolle bei der Düngung des Bodens, indem sie Blattabfälle zerkleinern und in Fäkalien verwandeln, die sie in tiefere Bodenschichten tragen. Das Foto wurde Mitte September in meinem Garten in der Provinz Alicante aufgenommen.
