mark,

@GregorTacTac If you use containers you can map something like 8080 on the host to 80 in the container. Generally it's recommended to have a reverse proxy listening on 80 and 443 with all your individual applications on localhost only high ports.

Maybe it's petty of me, but whenever a show or movie has a character flick a cigarette butt to the ground wherever they happen to be standing, I instantly hate that character, regardless of whatever else they have going on. You're already giving yourself and those around you cancer, you don't have to throw smoldering trash on the floor too 🤬🤬🤬

mark,

@toplesstopics Remind me not to let you anywhere near my dad, he does that and throws them out of the car window.

Rocket.Chat is trying to trick us. Shame!

If you're looking for an open-source community platform, don't look at Rocket.Chat. The company behind it is becoming worse and worse.

First they paywalled standard functionality, now they silently put people running "community edition" on "enterprise trial" hoping to catch people off-guard and scare them into paying up.
What kind of garbage business is this?

A scare email titled "You're halfway through a Rocket.Chat's Enterprise trial".

mark,

@unfa @dusnm Can't trust them either due to the SSO tax.

To celebrate a one year anniversary of my blog post "A netizen’s guide to Mastodon and the fediverse" [1], I'd like to rerun one of the polls [2] from the article:

Have you ever made a donation to a fediverse server admin?

#fediverse #poll #survey #SocialMedia #donation

mark,

@stefan Since I am an admin, does moving money between my own accounts count?

Brooooo, they were not kidding when they said my new meds increase sun sensitivity. I just got a sunburn, in 20 minutes outside. IN MARCH. IN SEATTLE.

mark,

@Seirdy @Meyerweb @mattmay That's why in Europe you can't have stupidly high numbers, it caps at 50+

Ok, with the gas stove thread, people won't stop asking why I'm not considering an induction cooktop. So here's another thread where I try to answer this.

Perhaps the bottom line is this: I'm a Midwesterner. It carries a lotta baggage.

To elucidate, first you should understand that I have tried induction! Not the best experiences of it, to be sure, but I've used two portable burners and found them both to be impressive (with a few caveats). But on the whole, not a game changer to me.

mark,

@TechConnectify @chloeraccoon It makes perfect sense from the account's point of view. why spend money to design something new when you can take your existing oven and hob to just slam together.

mark,

@TechConnectify @anthony Don't forget that induction can work through an insulator between the pan and hob. IKEA even make one with a magnet inside it so it stays with the pan when you move it to the counter.

mark,

@TechConnectify @mmalc That's basically the opposite to here. The UK norm is to have a fitted oven with a separate hob directly above, and normally wired to the same switch.

Then there's a gap for the free-standing washing machine, because that's always the one kitchen appliance that isn't integrated.

The whole concept of #palworld offends me. Like, it's Pokémon... With guns. As if kids in the US aren't constantly exposed to guns (with a very real chance of being shot to death by one) already??

mark,

@toplesstopics You forget the slavery as well.

Hey guys, great work on the new upgrade for Friendica. it was SO worth the wait.
Loving the video, audio, picture only feed option. We get our own tiktok or pixelfed here without needing another account!

There are a few bugs that made it through beta test but can easily get fixed.
The groups menu layout is a bit messed up, and there is this big blank gap under photos. If I post a photo via cut and paste, the image is still really small instead of full size. All easy things to fix, the really hard stuff has been done already, its a CSS issue.

mark,

@anubis2814 That's a caching issue, your browser is still using the CSS from the previous release.

goatsarah, to developers

Hi. Just updated to 2023.12

I'm not sure it should look like this?

mark,

@goatsarah You have the CSS from the old version cached, just need to force refresh to get it to normal.

For all the money they rake in with massive for-profit premiums, kaiser permanente sure seems to have too many patients and not enough doctors. it shouldn't take my frail, elderly dad THREE MONTHS to see his pcp.

mark,

@toplesstopics Even the NHS isn't that bad. You can't actually book an appointment directly any more with mine, but you will get a telephone consultation within 3 working days of completing a triage form.

mark,

@toplesstopics I only said getting to speak to the doctor, anything after that is when you hit the bureaucracy, waiting lists, and general incompetence. Not just for trans care, but anything that requires referrals (except for cancer).

I recently noticed that the State of Illinois has changed the font of the stamping on license plates.

The design is the same, but the stamped text is a bit thinner and the glyphs are blockier.

I am surprised how much this change is bothering me, to be honest. It has never occurred to me how much that is a defining feature. The first one I saw I assumed had to be fake!

mark,

@TechConnectify @nowster For temporary plates our process is the complete opposite, those are the only ones produced by the DVLA. The big difference is that those are only for use by dealership staff to move/demo cars that are untaxed.

Reminder: You Must Be 18+ Years Old to Access Lemmy World

This is a reminder that you must be at least 18 years old to access Lemmy World per their Terms of Service (ToS). Additionally, as moderators of this community, we are obliged to report violations of this rule, so we will have to report it to the admin team if a user in this community explicitly identifies as younger than 18...

mark,

@BackOnMyBS @savvywolf With federation the only sensible way to deal with this is to use the precedent set by email.

You don't agree to any of Google's ToS just by sending to a @gmail.com address, and if sending from a work address you certainly wouldn't have the authority to bind the company. Of course Google can do what they want with their spam filter, including blocking everything from you.

Following that the terms of lemmy.world have no relevance to external users, unless the admins decide to defederate. Even then there would still be direct delivery between other servers for followers, along with parent post fetching.

Is it rude to say that the north American credit score system is perverse institutionalized subjugation for profit? Like that the whole economic system for consumers is a perfectly legal gangrenous teet for AmEx et.al.?

If you tell someone who’s not from the US or Canada that you are forced to continuously get into debt for all your life in order to get a mortgage or rent a place they won’t take you seriously

The seemingly random end of Fight Club makes so much more sense once you learn this

mark,

@kierkegaank The annoying thing is the credit reference agencies trying to push all their monitoring products over here, when the reality is that like our panel shows the points don't mean anything.

Oh great, my kids are back on the "someday the sun will expand and kill us all" existential dread track 🙃

mark,

@toplesstopics I guess that pointing out that they're more likely to get shot won't really help.

mark,

@Tippon That is a big part of the point behind containers, you don't have any long term state inside them. Migration is just a case of copying the configuration over along with the contents of any persistent volumes.

It's worth looking into Podman instead of Docker, the daemon-less architecture makes it more lightweight and secure as it's easier to have rootless containers. Management can also be easer as being a Red Hat project it integrates well into Systemd.

With your existing server on Xubuntu you may as well stick with Ubuntu Server or Debian for the familiarity.

mark,

@andruid @Tippon Stay away from k8s for now, that's more for when you have a cluster of multiple physical servers. The systemd services are more useful in a single server environment.

The way that works is that once you have the containers set up, podman can save the configuration of them as unit files so they can be managed the same way as native server software. This makes it easier to have them all start automatically after a reboot, and is a requirement for enabling automatic updates.

I've been trying to follow the dentist's advice by not rinsing my mouth after brushing but I don't like it... It feels like I've got grit on my teeth 😑

mark,

@toplesstopics @paul You get better lasting protection from the fluoride by not washing it away.

mark,

@Rogue I'm familiar enough with Manchester from years of family holidays that I could have easily followed the usual routine and found some of the lesser used seating areas. At Amsterdam it did help quite a bit with being able to manage such a large busy place and reduce the worry of being late.

mark,

@robinj1995 No it isn't, the Spanish airports also maintain segregation between arrivals and departures.

mark,

@robinj1995 That's not the case either, the non-Schengan part of Amsterdam Schiphol is mixed as well. The only separation is along the corridor for the H/M gates as those handle both Schengan and non-Schengan flights.
