As a person who just flies, it's absolutely impossible for me to tell how much of this is a shift from the past versus increased reporting now that Boeing's in the spotlight

@annmlipton I don’t even know how a plane could do this.

jtlg,
@jtlg@mastodon.lawprofs.org avatar

@annmlipton I get this on an abstract level, but I think I will need to find an explanation that gets into relative velocities and does some calculations for me to actually believe it.

jtlg,
@jtlg@mastodon.lawprofs.org avatar

@annmlipton I repeat, I still don’t know how a plane can physically do this. Are they equipped with downward lateral thrusters? Someone is going to have to explain this with force diagrams and high-school-level equations before it makes any sense to me.

Something exceptionally grim is happening on the Internet.

In the last few months, the constant flood of algorithmically generated junk content has kicked into an AI-powered overdrive, and it is cutting a swath of destruction as it overwhelms search engines, filters, and moderation systems

Call it Gresham's Law 2.0: bad content drives out good.

I'm starting this thread to document it, because there is a lot happening all at once.

Fake Funeral Live Stream Scams Are All Over Facebook

https://www.404media.co/fake-funeral-live-stream-scams-are-all-over-facebook/

"Scammers are copying genuine funeral service announcements, making their own Facebook accounts, then directing vulnerable victims to a fake livestream page. “It causes panic on the day where you shouldn't be thinking of that,” one impacted person said.”

Ghost Kitchens Are Advertising AI-Generated Food on DoorDash and Grubhub

https://www.404media.co/ghost-kitchens-are-advertising-ai-generated-food-on-doordash-and-grubhub/

"It’s common for advertisements to stage or edit pictures of food to make it look more enticing, but in these cases the ghost kitchens are showing people pictures of food that literally doesn’t exist, and looks nothing like the actual items they’re selling, sometimes because the faulty AI is producing physically impossible food items. Tech writer Kara Swisher has a new book. Enter the AI-generated scams.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2024/03/01/amazon-ai-fake-books-authors/

"Swisher looked at the screen and saw a book claiming to be a new biography of her, with an image on the cover that she immediately pegged as an AI-generated fake. … A closer look suggested that the book itself might be largely or entirely AI-generated, substituting generic descriptions of Swisher for factual details or anecdotes."

Why Is Your News Site Going Out of Business?

"If you look at that graph you can see that if your business was ads and remained ads you’re toast."

Sotomayor: I came into this thinking there are different functionalities for websites. Social media, email, etc. This law might be legitimate as to some sites. Maybe direct messaging should give you notice, or have a 30-day period. Why at this stage, on a facial challenge, should we say there's no legitimate sweep?

A: It was passed with viewpoint discrimination. It also is shot through with content-based provisions

Q: You could have brought an as-applied challenge limited to Facebook and YouTube.

A: We think this statute is unconstitutional in all its applications.

Q: But on remand, it's still a facial challenge. There's nothing to sort out on remand, For practical purposes, it's done.

A: There's the whole merits. We haven't won on the merits yet.

Q: All or nothing.
