One of these days I’m gunna actually have to figure out AppArmor…

@swaggboi I'm pretty sure there is an apt-get purge in there somewhere.

are there any good tablets that aren't made by psychopaths or is it still that way?

jmhorner,
@jmhorner@eattherich.club avatar

@eletious Part of me feels like that is the wrong question. I was feeling the same way about phones last year when @specter suggested I look in to GrapheneOS, which I did... and haven't looked back. I like a lot of the upsides of GrapheneOS, but one of the downsides is that it only supports Google Pixel devices (including Pixel Tablet). Anyways, I think all I am saying is that it MAY be helpful to start with deciding what applications you want to run, finding an OS that you like and which can run those apps, and then choosing a tablet from the OSs supported devices. Boy, I kind of took the long way around on that one. :blobcatlaugh:

How many people that sucked Microsoft's dick and said it was not bothersome enough to switch away from it are now going apeshit over Windows 11 incorporating tracking "AI", ahahahaha

@sun I wonder how many chumps are still esophagus-deep on Microsoft and proud of it.

I used to run the dnscrypt.ca DNS resolvers on ULayer VPSs right up until they stopped hosting in Canada. After some hunting around I eventually landed at inet.ws with a single resolver. Today I received this email from them and I think these are pretty cool features. This hosting company is working out quite well for me and I think anyone who is considering getting a VPS should give them a look.

Roku is a fucking shining example of late-stage capitalism. First they push an update to get rid of the channel numbers so you just have to scroll through hundreds of FAST channels to find fuckin Pawn Stars. Then I guess enough people joined the angry mob that they brought the channel numbers back but with a twist: THEY’RE NOT IN NUMERICAL ORDER. There is no numeric keypad on a Roku remote so the only way the numbers were ever useful were being in order.

It is a TELEVISION why are there even updates at all?? What fucking outcome are they going for here? What the fuck experiment are we living in now where channel 3 isn’t fuckin channel 3 anymore I’m flabbergasted (I did find Pawn Stars after 5 min.)

jmhorner,
@jmhorner@eattherich.club avatar

@swaggboi Dude, dump Roku... seriously. It's worth it. :verified:

jmhorner,
@jmhorner@eattherich.club avatar

@swaggboi It is getting harder to find dumb TVs, but I like 'em. I do have a Sharp/Roku TV, but I never connected it to my network (I play media off a USB device). Alternatively I guess I could connect it to the network and setup my router/gateway device to not give it Internet access... that way I would have access to other devices on my local network. The downside is that Roku doesn't connect to cifs shares (I mean come on, right?). I'm just sayin' there's options. :blobcatpirate:

@swaggboi Could you convince The Mrs. to use Kodi or something? That might get ya some mileage. If you are using dnsmasq for your DNS poisoning you are welcome to bastardize my little script to add to your junk-blocking pleasure.

I was just reading through a PDF I found though @00Aaron 's earlier link to omidyar.com and saw this under a section called "Our Vision for Fair, Equitable Tax Policy". That almost looks like people trying to throw common sense at economics!

So, is there a way for a Canadian to get Grit TV without having to pay some ridiculous cost for streaming "packages" and without having to use some shitty "app"? For something that is free to air it sure seems hard to get. :-(

@jmhorner@eattherich.club avatar

@swaggboi Oh man, this is the closest I have come... if I open it from my IP address I get the error message below. However, if I tunnel it through SSH on a VPS I have in the US I can get at it. I have also found that if I open my browser web-dev-tools I can find the m3u8 that is driving the stream. Then, if I copy the URL of the m3u8 and pump it to mpv, and use the --stream-record option I can save the stream as a .ts file. Then I can use ffmpeg to convert it to an mp4 with the qualities I like in a video file. Dude, this might be a go! :-)

Apparently I'm an hour too early to do laundry in this building. Very tempted to break in the laundry room rn just cause

jmhorner,

@specter Is tub-laundry an option? It is boring and time consuming, but it works. :-)

jmhorner,
@jmhorner@eattherich.club avatar

@specter I've been doin' tub-laundry for a few years now. Electricity is included with my rent, so I snuck a small 120V dryer in here when nobody was lookin'. I have also noticed that (1) Borax works wonders and (2) when my clothes are soaking in the tub it really shows how dirty they get. :blobcatcheer:
