Hate to be agreeing with dh-h, but JS is fun and TS is a chore. Sure you can build more reliable software with TS, but few languages beat JS at that most enjoyable malleable exploratory stage where you mostly just write down what’s in your head, then find patterns of abstraction and reshuffle things until you have a proper software. Then you can sprinkle types on top.

Solved.
help, I’m building the CouchDB binary on Sonoma on the latest Xcode 15 beta and I’m getting: “has been blocked because it may reduce your privacy and lower the security of your Mac.” when launching the app after a successful build. Can’t find anything about this online. Halp.

Update: the “app” is a Cocoa app that uses NSTask to launch a command-line executable within its Contents/Resources. Starting the executable separately works fine. It seems I’m not allowed to NSTask.

A bit of a nightmare week is coming to an end and my body is cashing in the extra energy I needed to make it this far. I’m going back to my (temporary) bed for the rest of the day.

Please send me your most recent pet pictures. 🫶

(The week recap: Water damage, moldy flat, ad-hoc move out, pet illness (getting better), move-into-and-make-liveable temp accommodation ~25% done).

Teenager drops backpack and falls flat onto the floor.

Networking nerds: I’m in the market for a UniFi router. I think within the next two years, I would like to upgrade to a Dream Machine (DM) type thing. But right now, all I really need is a Dream Router (DR) at ~1/2 the price.

Should I…

…and why?

I’m casually in the market for a set of ebikes. I’m very likely fine with secondhand ones, and I have some variability with what I’m looking for. I know my way around regular bikes, but I wouldn’t know where to start learning about the ins ans outs of ebikes. hHow do I fill this gap so I can make an informed purchase decision? Comparative tests by reputable sources have not really helped me.

I’m not looking for specific bike recc’s, I just want to learn what’s important to look out for.

I, a self-proclaimed Apple fanboy, watched and read a number of Vision Pro reviews and this isn’t for me. At least not yet. It feels a lot like the original Apple Watch felt to me: nothing. I got a watch at Series 4 and I can be convinced the vision thing will then be cheaper and better in a couple of years, but I also have zero FOMO until then. ✌️

Heya Berlin tech nerd mutuals, I’m trying something new:

I haven’t seen y’all in literal years and I do miss hanging out, but with varying needs for covid safety, this isn’t happening indoors. I’m also not interested in organising a meetup, but I want us to see each other, so:

Meet me at Zenner beer garden for lunch on Monday July 3rd. I’ll be there 12–14 and you come around whenever it suites you.

Zenner has veggie & vegan food and if you can’t afford the prices, we have a support fund.

current conundrum: buy fair trade / organic / sustainable underwear that lasts me ~12 months or buy other random shit that lasts much longer.

What are you choosing and what are your experiences? (Online shops only).

Will I be able to finish Horizon: Zero Dawn + Frozen Wilds in time for Friday’s Zelda release? I’m at ~82% main story and ~5 hours into Frozen Wilds. I don’t need to do everything but it’s gonna be right :)

I’m currently again on a ~1200km total round trip across the country in an EV.

Current rental lottery status: won again, Mercedes EQS, this time in white with a slightly different feature set.

AMA.

Open Source development experience on macOS:

  • wait 1 hour for Xcode update (mainly because the download is capped at 12MB/s 🙄), yes I’m using the “fast” method.
  • wait 15 minutes for homebrew upgrade
  • wait ??? for notarisation because sometimes it takes a minute and sometimes an hour.

In my case I have to do this twice, once for arm64 and once for x86_64, but at least I can do those in parallel.

LE SIGH.

Well, officially in the market for a Slack replacement now. Hit me. What are you personally happy with in a small business setting, strong macOS/iOS support, user friendly, including nontechnical folks?

Say I have two JS projects that get a combined 10M* downloads a week on npm and I can’t apply for the STF or Prototypefund, where can I apply for funding for the maintenance of the projects.

*I was shocked.

Third time’s the charm, as I keep missing hanging out with you all:

Berlin mutuals, meet me for a covid-safe, outside, informal get together / lunch on Monday, August 14th, 12–14, feel free to join when convenient.

We’re meeting* at https://zenner.berlin, they have vegi/vegan food & drink.

If you can’t afford this, we have a solidarity find, just message me privately beforehand.

(*weather permitting, but it looks good atm)

[Update: solved https://mastodon.social/@l33tname/112479918099141409]

So the heartbeat linux-ha package has not been kept up to date with python 3.x and been replaced by a MUCH more complicated thing. Are there any alternatives? All I need is: “here is two computers, one is a hot standby for the other, run a script when the primary goes away”. This literally needs three lines of config, and definitely NO XML yeeesh.
