Thinking about my time here on Mastodon since Oct 2022, I managed to get a few people to join, but they never seem to post... or maybe they just moved on.

As strange as it sounds... social media is work! I mean, without an algorithm and advertising shoving things at you, you really do need to do some work of following people to get cool shit in your timeline.

And I guess maybe that's just too much work for some people.

Lazy people love Twitter and Facebook I guess.

@rasterweb on the web version you can select to notifications for all posts from someone's profiles. I use that to not miss stuff.

Remember the world around 2007, where you used @pidgin so that you could be logged into AIM to talk to your US friends, ICQ for your European friends, and YIM and MSN to talk to those 3 weirdos all at the same time? Eventually, folks like AOL and GTalk added XMPP support. let you "" between services but the promise of XMPP never really became a reality (example: https://superuser.com/questions/717272/is-it-possible-to-talk-to-aim-users-with-any-jabber-client-via-any-jabber-accoun).

I have hope that does what it couldn't. You can already follow , etc.

grimmy,
@grimmy@mastodon.social avatar

@joe @pidgin just to be clear, xmpp is still here and widely used. While activitypub has a lot of similarity, it is more geared towards social media posts instead of messaging which xmpp does a very good job at. That's not to say that activitypub can do direct messaging and group chats, it's just not designed for that.

@jabberati @joe @pidgin you may want to look at my profile.. but my comment was for your "doesn't support big proprietary networks".. 😄

grimmy,
@grimmy@mastodon.social avatar

@joe @andrew @pidgin I didn't take it as a dig. As I stated the intended purposes of xmpp and activitypub are different.

Yes google finally turned off Google talk and Google hangouts recently. Google chat is still around and pidign can connect to it but we need to do some work to fix authentication again.

Find out all about APIs and why they’re so important to ecosystems on the #osspodcast with @joshbressers and @kurtseifried https://opensourcesecurity.io/2023/06/25/episode-381-wtf-reddit-apis-and-risk/ tldr no api, no power users, no ecosystem. Also what Reddit did is literally beyond stupid but probably ok for making their quarterly bonus.

grimmy,
@grimmy@mastodon.social avatar

@kurtseifried @joshbressers just saying, AIM, MSN, ICQ, and YIM didn't have APIs... 🤣

grimmy,
@grimmy@mastodon.social avatar

@kurtseifried @joshbressers Maybe eventually, but they'd didn't for MANY years.

We (gaim/pidgin), Trillian, and others in the community reverse engineered everything. Eventually they added support for 3rd party clients but they would routinely try to block us and other 3rd party clients.

See also https://www.nplusonemag.com/issue-19/essays/chat-wars/. Pidgin solved this by using a php3 script that would look at the values of the binary file and return them for us to log in.

I’m not complaining, and this is probably a good thing, but since I have been in the USA the TikTok app is unable to connect, no matter what connection I use. Weird. (I don’t need solutions, just pointing it out)

Imagine how much storage space in the world could be saved if every photo of an old Windows key that people took "just in case" was deleted and replaced with a text file.

grimmy,

@JoeRess imagine how much disk space would be saved is windows was free...

iPhone users: What's the equivalent of adb push Music /sdcard/ ?

As in, is it possible to upload several gigabytes of music to an iPhone and then listen to it with VLC (or similar)?

If so, how? Please don't tell me it involves the modern day equivalent of iTunes.

If you suggest something like Spotify we might fall out.

grimmy,
@grimmy@mastodon.social avatar

@danirabbit @JoeRess Us old people bought these things when we were younger called CD's.. And we ripped them to mp3 and flac eons ago when we purchased them and really don't see a need to purchase them again as we already have physical copies.

I guess I’m supposed to be arguing about the Meta-Feta-Verse stuff but I’m busy building and painting my Little Free Art Gallery so I can distribute (free, little) art to people in my neighborhood. (And I hate painting!)

My company added seating for around 30 people in an area of the office that was completely empty before today. I am slightly curious how they intend to use it. 🤔

Am I the only person who used the reddit web site in a desktop browser with a computer? Was everyone using it with a mobile app?

(Actually I did use the official reddit app sometimes and it seemed fine.)

(But also, fuck those guys now!)

@joe @rasterweb But they'll do their best to trick you into installing and using the app...

grimmy,

@Crystals @rasterweb @joe this is what I'm referring to, primary button is to open the app and this shows up every time I open a reddit page. I think it's tied to a session cookie or something.

@joshbressers @kurtseifried @carol @Di4na we already had flat namespaces for everything with source forge, berlios, savannah, etc. Worked fine for the most part although things have changed quite a bit since then.
