Local community college has an opening for a part time cyber security professor. I thought that would be fun, I have some time, I have teaching experience, I meet all the other qualifications, so I send in a resume and CL via their automated web form. AND get auto rejected by the HR bot because I didn’t tic the Masters degree box.

fsmontenegro,

@spacerog It's precisely this kind of thing that is making me consider doing a master's soon, ahead of future years where being part time cyber professor would fit nicely with part time retirement...

contempating noforn.infosec.exchange for the vehemently opposed 🤔 Then again, I think they all left already.

fsmontenegro,

@Viss @jerry personally I’m incredibly grateful for your efforts. My personal opinion is that I’m ok with federation.

It’s remarkable how every time #OpenAI releases a new feature, another crop of AI startups end up looking like this.

fsmontenegro,

@carnage4life what was it now?

Geez. People are becoming complete sea lioning a-holes about Threads. I am done, and my ban hammer is out.

fsmontenegro,

@jerry Just know you have plenty of very thankful users around here as well. Your work was/is instrumental in getting us to a much nicer place. THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!

Quick question- what do Mac people use for budgeting and investment tracking? Bonus points for something that can handle multiple currencies (Canadian and US dollars) and has good tracking of Canadian and US mutual funds.
I’m currently on Quicken (on Windows) and considering jumping to Mac for next personal laptop. Not immediate need so taking my time.

Curious about something. For those that are using OpenAI API directly and not via ChatGPT, how are you managing costs for hobbyist-level usage? I’m interested in exploring more but want to understand what magnitude of cost I’m looking at….
Thinking about activities such as summarizing text, creating drafts (in the 200 word range) and more.
Thanks!

Do you remember the first programming language you used? What was it?

Curious about something. How do you go about planning things for yourself or your family?
Thinking of the following high level options but curious about other options so mention them in comments.
Please share for reach. Thanks!

fsmontenegro,

@duncanhart thanks. I’m hoping to be a little more strategic with my planning…
So far everything seems to be working out but I could use some better long term planning.

I know many of my Jewish friends and acquaintances are right now marking 30 days since the barbaric atrocities of October 7th. My deepest sympathies to them as they honour the memory of the murdered and the fallen.

fsmontenegro,

@philvenables Very nice, thanks! industry analyst hits close :-) I personally find the category name creation game annoying but agree there’s a lot (too much) of that going on…

Looking forward to KubeCon+CloudNativeCon next week. Lots of interesting things happening in security for cloud-native tech. :-)

#RStats #Python folks who need to free data from icky public Tableau things shld give this "data surgery” repo of @Medewitt's a gander. Lots of "sleeves rolled up" hard work you should lean vs. suffer on your own.

fsmontenegro,

@hrbrmstr @Medewitt this is great, thanks. Will help as I poke around Tableau too.

ksaj, to infosec

Was at Toronto's most of the day.

Managed to bump into a few old friends and colleagues, and even one of my students, who has stayed in the biz all these years.

So many new companies and products. I just break things. I don't know 💩 about cloud security these days, but I'm about to FAFO in the best way.

PS: Is Blackhat even on Mastodon? I can only find those fowl site leech bots that repost what they post on the X-fowls site. (cue in the echo theme song). But it seems like they should have a real presence here.

fsmontenegro,

@ksaj sorry I missed you!

I’m looking for suggestions/workarounds for an annoying issue with watching YouTube on AppleTV: switching between normal speed and faster (1.5-2x) requires over 10 up/side/down/click steps with the remote. Are there any alternative ways of getting video speeds to change that don’t require this many steps? (Not watching on computer and not ditching AppleTV)
Thanks!!!

When I attend sessions at conferences, I often take pictures of the slides, but then when I come home I need to sort through dozens if not hundreds of pictures. Anyone have any suggestions on apps (iOS please) that can help with potentially organizing pictures as I take them? I don't want to manually create an album for each session, for example.
Thanks!

fsmontenegro,

@anca @jerry I’ll try that. Thanks!

fsmontenegro,

@mose Interesting, thanks. I will explore that next time. Trying to match raw pictures to a session by timestamp is annoying :-)

fsmontenegro,

@rotopenguin Good idea, easy to implement, thanks!

Lee_Holmes, to random

@jerry People talk about the Fediverse like it's a thing that magically sustains itself, but it doesn't. I don't know how much you hear this, but you don't hear it enough :) Thank you for everything you do to keep infosec.exchange alive and well. Re-upping my sponsorship makes me happy every time I do it.

fsmontenegro,

@Lee_Holmes @jerry same. Just renewed mine last week. Jerry, words can’t express the great work you have done for this community.

Having a nice time tinkering with ChatGPT, plugins et al. Great options for helping navigate external content consumption a little better.
That said, I'm not comfortable sharing sensitive data - recordings, internal papers, ... - with external services. Anyone have suggestions on what to use for article summarization and video transcription that executes locally? Happy to use Python or R as needed.
Thanks!

Had a really enjoyable participation experience at a panel yesterday for Dark Reading virtual event. Great chat with other participants on endpoint security, zero trust, and more. The highlight? NO MENTIONS of generative AI! :-D Not to say that it isn't an important factor, of course, but that there is room for meaningful discussions without resorting to buzzword du jour.
(disclaimer: Dark Reading is a "sister company" to Omdia, both part of InformaTech)

Does anyone know if an alternative exists for the MIT Spoofer project - http://spoofer.csail.mit.edu/ - what would track the status of IP spoofing in networks? Thanks!

I missed when it happened but it’s honestly pretty amazing that you can print from phones now???

fsmontenegro,

@leigh @spacerog I'm now smack in the middle of trying to troubleshoot our local printer (Brother DCP-L2520DW) that has very strange behavior in terms of disappearing from our network, coming back, disappearing, ... Involves troubleshooting the printer (with god-awful UI for text input), the wireless network, and the local DHCP server. So...much...fun... /s
I think it's apropos that @shortridge is talking about witchcraft...
I should probably watch that scene from Office Space to calm down...
