I used to make websites. I wrote “Design for Community.” I designed the original Blogger. I created JPG Magazine, Fray, Kvetch, Cute-Fight, and more.

Now I grow flowers and turn them into CBD products for https://milkbarn.farm. I take care of 30-something chickens, 13 goats, 3 dogs, 2 cats, and my wife and myself in Boring, Oregon.

Nazis, TERFs, and Republicans can fuck off. Do not explain capitalism to me.

He/him.

I keep hearing people say AI generated text "will get better” as if that’s a known, accepted fact.

But it's not a known, accepted fact. Massive language model AI text generators have been around for YEARS, and they've always been this bad, this prone to lying, this full of shit. We’re just getting it shoved in our faces now.

“It will get better” is a bet, not a statement of fact, and I bet against it.

Google did not roll this out now because it was good, they rolled it out now because Bing did it first and they panicked. They also fired all the people who had been saying, no, it's not ready yet, even though those people were right then, and they're still right now.

And Bing only rolled it out because they had a search engine nobody gave a shit about and had to try something desperate because they need eyeballs to put ads next to.

Capitalism is why we're all seeing this shit now. Capitalism.

What's amazing to me is that I hear tech skeptics repeating the "it'll get better in the future" line and I'm like why would you think that? It hasn't gotten better recently, or even not-that-recently. It's fundamentally the wrong tool in the wrong place for a search engine. I don't think there's any amount of work that can make it better, even by people who give a shit about truth or providing a good user experience, and there's no evidence that Google and Bing give a shit about those things.

Pretty sure this isn't a new realization, but AI at the moment is like a combination of the electric motor and nuclear power:

  1. The electric motor ended up everywhere and became mundane

  2. The excitement around nuclear power in the 50s led to people wanting to put nuclear power in everything, like the Ford Nucleon! That... didn't happen.

It's most likely that AI/ML/LLMs become mundane and disappear into the OS layer. Arguably Apple's been doing this for ages, just not the LLM part.

fraying,
@fraying@xoxo.zone avatar

@danhon Yup. AI for the sake of AI is a hype-cycle driven by bosses who wanna fire workers and chip salesmen. In reality, if AI works, it'll just disappear into better spellcheck and Siri just quietly getting things right more often.

@KatM thanks! I was a designer before I was a farmer and our labels are the only places I get to play with design anymore. :)

fraying,
@fraying@xoxo.zone avatar

@KatM Well, I burnt out in a nearly life-destroying way, left San Francisco without telling anyone, and moved to a couple acres in Oregon with no plan, so ... don't do it like me.

This is such a fascinating video and exemplifies a point I've been making for a long time: doing a thing ironically is still Doing The Thing. There's a pipeline from doing it for the joke to just fucking doing it, and the first story in the video is a perfect example.

You know how there’s a big barrel where you can empty your water bottle before you go through airport security?

Texas has the same thing, but it’s for guns.

@gknauss In Amsterdam, it’s weed.

Amsterdam is better.

I’m at a soccer game in Orlando and I overhear folks behind me

👩‍🦳 ugh, did you see the flag behind the goal?

👨🏻yeah, thank god John isnt here to see it

👩‍🦳 I mean—I guess it’s ok to support kids

👨🏻 sure but, ugh, that flag

The flag in question:

If we’re headed to Starfleet Academy next, I need a classroom scene where we get a final explanation for Klingon physiology. Enterprise explained TOS look, but that look’s not used anywhere else, and then Discovery makes like five different looks, none of which are that one. #StarTrek

fraying,
@fraying@xoxo.zone avatar

@bixfrankonis I always go back to Worf’s explanation in DS9.

fraying,

@bixfrankonis oh heh. I don’t have this issue because I forgot Enterprise existed.

fraying,
@fraying@xoxo.zone avatar

@bixfrankonis FWIW, it also bugs me how bad Discovery fucked up the Klingons. That first season was brutal.

Pretty cold, wet spring so far. Projected to still be in the low 40s overnight even 10 days from now in early June. I’m looking at hundreds of hemp starts in the garage that need lows above 50 to be planted out and wondering when I’m going to be able to do that.

fraying,

@kevbob it’s weird, right? Or, at least, weird in a different way.

fraying,
@fraying@xoxo.zone avatar

@kevbob Oh yeah. There was a huge rainstorm in early June in 2022 that took out some plants I’d put out already. I’m much more cautious now.

fraying,
@fraying@xoxo.zone avatar

These are the things I think about now.

It’s nice.

fraying,
@fraying@xoxo.zone avatar

@lemay oh no! My peppers look okay - some leaf discoloration from the cold, but they're still blooming, which is amazing. And, yeah, the toms seem fine. They're tough.

Hemp really likes heat and light, tho, and we ain't got that yet (and it's not coming soon, which is what's worrying me).

fraying,
@fraying@xoxo.zone avatar

@lemay I've decided to start everything later next year.
