In other news, I went full "Stendhal syndrome" in front of the stained glasses within the Cathedral of Lausanne, which are just breath taking.

As expected, there really was tense discussion yesterday.

Like, someone shouted at me during coffee break, with a lot of "f**k" involved and people around like 😱 .

After, he apologised and we decided we can still be friends outside of astronomy.👍

Also played table tennis vs the one who gave a talk explicitly to dismantle my conclusions of the day before.
Scientists are like 🤷‍♂️

I'd put all this into the basket of the good human interactions I had in life!

Fun things that can happen at a conference: tomorrow there will be a heated discussion about the correct way to remove a foreground from an extragalactic observation - the sort of life and death fights you have in astronomy 😅

But guess how many experts in the actual observation and foreground modelling are present at this conference:

ZERO.

So chairs are likely going to be thrown for nothing...

And I blame magnetic fields for this.

Cool to have the same colleagues arguing about a question they already debated a year ago (conference I organised back then) , getting to the same standstill, as if they had no chance of exchanging mails in a year 🙄

some people gathered this week (actually, also in the past few weeks, but that's the only one I am attending) at the Bernoulli Centre in Lausanne to know more...

The combination of all these, for the case of relativistic electrons, gives the total synchrotron emission from the cosmic web, from galaxies to filaments.

It is annoying in #mastodon to still keep missing a lot of interesting posts by people in my list, which live in an almost specular time zone. although I have put them in dedicated lists, if I forget to check them regularly, their stuff is just lost to me.
So the only thing is to click on the 🔔 for each of such profiles. That however messes up with the notifications.
ffff....

Reasonably proud of seeing the data in my new suite of simulations with ENZO:
the left panel shows the usual gas temperature, the right one shows the number density of cosmic ray electrons injected by star formation (red) and active galactic nuclei (green).

Sources of magnetic fields appear in this universe - which just samples the first ~1/10 of evolution of a big 2048^3 simulations running on LEONARDO at CINECA (using a customised version of the ENZO code), and it just samples a thin slice through the simulation.

Magnetic field strength on the left, gas density on the right.
The injection of magnetic fields here only follows the onset of star formation (and later on of active galactic nuclei).

This is an astrophysics take of the #solarstrom : I have just used the CosmicRay Detector app on my laptop by the Global Cosmic Ray Observatory https://apps.apple.com/us/app/cosmic-ray-detect-radiation/id1169131314

to measure the flux of muons through the blocked shutter of the Ipad.

I don't have stats to compare with, but since I have already done the same experiment in the last two weeks speaking of cosmic ray detection at lecture, I have the feeling the muon flux is a bit higher now (~1 event/second).

Correcting a student's thesis or article still is a good way to learn english, and especially to discover things you are used to say since decades are likely wrong.
Latest discoveries for me:

  • difference between amount and quantity
  • "meridional" vs "meridian"
