I switched to cause I felt the IBM would steward it. The quality is top notch, but I don't want to standardize my life again on another "windows".

fossrob,

@imnotafeline hard to take anything Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols writes on the subject seriously since finding out he works for CiQ's PR agency...

https://twitter.com/GordonMessmer/status/1675997483573612546

fossrob,

@imnotafeline you're right it doesn't. To me it's the fact that there's no actual evidence, only wild speculation that negates that conclusion. Not saying it's impossible, but tomorrow is 4 years to the day since the IBM announcement and there hasn't been a single leaked memo or email by a current or ex Red Hat employee showing any IBM meddling. On the contrary there are countless examples of #redhatters saying the opposite.

anything_synth, to linux

Anyone using quickemu? Is it any good? #linux

fossrob,

@anything_synth very. You could do everything yourself but it takes all the work out of figuring out what qemu commands to use. I use '--display spice' rather than the default and it just takes care of setting all the right flags 👍🏻

GNOME RFE: I just want a button for GNOME shell's overview that will close all of these. "Close all" / "tidy up" / "clean up my mess" whatever

because click click click click click click click click click click click click with a few mistargeted click clicks is tedious

/me wonders if this exists as an extension

fossrob,

@mairin Ooh I've been wanting something like this, thanks for the find!

Can we all agree to stop referring to the RHEL source export decision as CentOS drama? It doesn't affect CentOS at all. CentOS knew the rebuild model was fundamentally flawed and moved on to something better.

#RedHat #RHEL #CentOS

fossrob,

@jbouter @carlwgeorge @omenos now THIS is how the discussions should've been going all along 🙌

"The thing I like about Ubuntu is that it's the exact same thing with or without paying for support."

That's not technically true anymore with Ubuntu Pro. During the first 5Y, Ubuntu Pro may give you updates to universe packages that you wouldn't otherwise get. Still, it's free for up to 5 instances IIRC, and the other updates for the core packages of the LTS haven't changed.

fossrob,

@jbouter @carlwgeorge @omenos Also not criticising Canonical or Ubuntu at all btw. I'd love Red Hat to do the same and just give away RHEL without support. If they did that there'd be no such thing as rebuilds or any of this drama. Buuuuut Red Hat would've have survived the early 2000's if they'd carried on like that. Canonical & Ubuntu have only made it this far because of Mark's financial backing and only become profitable fairly recently I believe.

I initially enjoyed Mastodon because the vibe was much more positive here than on the bird site. But for the past few weeks, with the 💩🌪️ caused by Red Hat and now Meta / Threads, the amount of cynicism on my timeline is approaching 🐦-like levels, the "good vibes" thing is gone, and I absolutely don't like it 😖

I might just start muting some keywords but sheesh y'all need to take a chill pill

Every Eero in my mesh was functioning as a Thread router and sending IPv6 RAs for the same /64, which meant Linux kept updating its routing table based on whichever one it saw most recently, which meant Chrome kept firing ERR_NETWORK_CHANGED errors if a page load was in flight when that happened and good lord

what are #cursed #sysadmin s that have to #rdp to windows boxes from #linux use these days?

I used to use #krdc, but that has stagnated and has gone janky under wayland. I started using the freerdp command aliased with all switches to "rdp" - but there are times this also feels a bit janky.

#remmina seems dated, #connections is too simplistic

have I missed anything good?

fossrob,

@gnuplusmatt I use #remmina myself at home but at work our MS lead has set up RDS servers that give you your own Windows session in the browser and using Windows Remote Desktop within that works surprisingly well.

Dang I love #tmux - I just accidentally closed my multi-pane window (Cmd-w instead of M-w to copy region in CLI emacs; I bind Cmd to Meta in GUI emacs 🙄 ). Do I have to start over? Nope!

    tmux ls

    shows it's still running, so

    tmux a

reconnects to it and voila, back like nothing happened 🎉

    fossrob,

@jonocarroll I haven't used tmux in a while but one thing that stopped me was when copying text from within a pane and not having it stop at the borders. So multi pane tmux, you want to select and copy 2 lines from the right pane, but the 2nd line includes everything in the left pane too. Are there plugins or better options for that specific type of mouse interaction these days? 🤔

    fossrob,

@jonocarroll nod that's what I've done in the past... sometimes I'll have a vertical split and want to be copying something from the right pane to the left so temporarily zooming is a pain. And most often it'll be more than 2 panes, like 4 in a grid so gets tricky to rearrange horizontally. Totally down to me though none of this is tmux's fault of course!

gitlab still not having a proper dark mode support is so painful

Ah man, what a pleasure it was to listen to this. It's a very different issue when you can take into context the whole story, see the big picture and look deeper than the headlines and FUD.

Also @carlwgeorge calling it like it is and not holding back the #hardtruths is 🤌🏻

    #redhat #opensource #linuxunplugged

    fossrob,

@gbraad I've waxed and waned with JB and admittedly haven't listened in quite a while, but yeah just really appreciated this one. Yes I love that Chris touched on that. The difference in "tone" and approach between Alma and Rocky is something I've noticed from the start...

    vpv, to RedHat

Out of curiosity, have people already found out the actual reason for the #RedHat source code strategy change. It probably isn't Alma or Oracle. So is it the #NASA - #RockyLinux deal, then? That was suggested in #LinuxUnplugged episode 517.

    fossrob,

@vpv maybe, but one department getting 3 (THREE) Rocky Linux Advanced Subscriptions past procurement is hardly a #NASA + #RockyLinux deal... nor does it mean they are going to space. But they will keep saying that :eyeroll:

    fossrob,

@vwbusguy @ragectl @gnuplusmatt umm, at $dayjob we have been planning a move from CentOS7 to RHEL9 and that hasn't changed. This whole thing actually has us considering where we can use CentOS Stream potentially... hides 🫣

    fossrob,

@vwbusguy @ragectl @gnuplusmatt what has objectively changed with RHEL though to justify that decision? As much as many don't like RH's decision, or the execution and communication thereof seems a little "heart" over "head" for a business to throw out months of work over?

    nixCraft, (edited ) to linux
    @nixCraft@mastodon.social avatar

Open Source community after Red Hat decides to go closed source 😂 #linux #redhat #rhel #opensource By limiting the RHEL public sources to CentOS Stream, it will now be more difficult for community/off-shoot enterprise Linux distributions like Alma Linux, Rocky Linux, Oracle Linux, etc, to provide 1:1 binary compatible builds against given RHEL releases.

    fossrob,

@nixCraft spreading the FUD that "Red Hat goes closed source" is really not helping the situation 🤦‍♂️

    fossrob, to RedHat

    https://openmetal.io/resources/blog/open-letter-to-redhat-on-centos-damage-to-your-brand-and-another-route-to-revenue/

As much as I appreciate #redhat and #redhatters I do strongly agree that the limitations on the $349/year self support server option are... bollocks. It wasn't always like that.

Only suitable for dev / test, but cannot be used as a virtual machine? What? Who's running their dev and test servers on bare metal in 2023?! 🤦‍♂️

CentOS Stream is now a good option instead I guess but pretty sure this would've pushed at least some to use a rebuild 🤔

    fossrob,

@evasb the model used by closed source companies? To me that's a stretch and furthers the misinformation that Red Hat is somehow less open source.

But anyway yes, there's a difference between RHEL who's binaries are not publicly downloadable, and Ubuntu where they are, for the first 5Y at least.

Had Canonical been first however who's to say they wouldn't have gone the RH way? Perhaps their model is in part because they were new and had to compete with already established RHEL etc?

    fossrob, (edited )

@omenos @evasb is it just me that no longer sees the "not for production" highlighted in scary red!?

edit: it was never there, it was added by the article author 🤦‍♂️

    fossrob,

@omenos @evasb It's like that on the screenshot in the article I linked (https://openmetal.io/resources/blog/open-letter-to-redhat-on-centos-damage-to-your-brand-and-another-route-to-revenue/)

    Looking again it says:

    "I highlighted the key item."

    🤦‍♂️ dammit

    gordonmessmer, to random

Personally, I think the idea that Stream will be the next version of RHEL a little backward. It makes Stream seem like a hypothetical, and supports the annoyingly persistent idea that it's something that hasn't been tested.

It's more accurate to view Stream as the current state of RHEL, while RHEL point releases are snapshots of a past state that receive extended support.

    fossrob,

@passthejoe @bookwar @gordonmessmer I think it's already solved. The impression that Stream "is the only major distro without critical patches for long periods" seems to be based on the period when Stream 8 was a real mess. It had to be moved from being a rebuild to being "above" RHEL while all the tooling and processes were still being created by Red Hat. I'm sure that was a nightmare to work around.
